I recently got my mitts on a GEM Damaskeene razor but I'm not sure about the blades does it take a special type of blade or will a normal DE work in it? And if it does take a special blade is there somewhere I can order them?
Gems take single edge blades. Double edge blades will not work. Not only are they the wrong shape but they're not thick enough to use in a Gem. Now the single edge blade you will need to use can be easily obtained at drug stores like Walgreens or CVS. Additionally you can get the blades in bulk from Ted Pella. The Ted Pella blades are supposedly a bit sharper and smoother than the ones you can buy locally, although I personally hadn't tried them yet. If you don't feel like buying 50 to 300 blades off the bat, BullGoose also sells the Ted Pella blades in packs of five .
I get very decent shaves with the Personna Gem Super Stainless from Walgreens.
I'm sure you're responding to the labeling in your razor advising that you use only genuine Damaskeene blades. It's like Chrysler insisting on MoPar antifreeze or Ford on Motorcraft oil filters. The name "Damaskeene" came from their use of Damascus steel honed to a keen edge.
