Full Bent Pipes, Yea or Nay?

I am a huge fan of full bent pipes, I've always loved full bent pipes, they have a perfect feel in my mouth when I'm smoking them and they have a certain aura about them that I find very appealing.
They are very hard to come by here where I live. Out of my whole collection of more than 50-pipes, I have only been able to procure 2 truly full bent pipes.

The one on your left is a 9mm filter pipe I found at a local smoke for around $20
Although its cheap and made out of cherry wood, surprisingly it smokes very well. I enjoy smoking Captain Black Royal with this pipe.
The one on your right is a vintage Savinelli Deluxe Milano 614 that I bought from a gentleman in Germany.
This pipe, as everyone here knows, is briar and is absolutely wonderful. It has something inscribed on the back of the shank that is very faint but looks like "HUBER Munchen" with two dots above the u. I really enjoy smoking English blends out of this pipe, specifically Sutliff Private Stock Blend No. 5 in this pipe.

So, what are your feelings about truly full bent pipes?
Do you love 'em, or do you hate 'em?

I have one that I'm working on, and I have high hopes for it. It's an Italian-made Oom Paul, and the bit is way worse off than the pictures showed. I'm in the process of deciding between shortening the stem a little and reshaping the bit, or just cleaning up what's there (very little left) and using softies on it.. the nice thing is that without the bulk of the bit, which is almost completely chewed away, the softy will be much less bulky. I'm leaning toward this, since I can always take it further if I want to.

I am more of a quarter-to-half bent fan, but I do love my Peterson red XL23 spigot. It is a true jaw hanger that smokes as good as it looks. My smallish Pete 314 System has about a 3/4 bend, which is about right for its size and weight.

I am not one to have the pipe dangling from my jaw; the reason I don't mind it with the XL23 is that the large apple base is like cradling a snifter full of tobacco, which I find eminently satisfying

without a doubt, these ones are awesome too

Thank you guys, I really like these pipes Cavefish, they are awesome pipes. I wish the Dr. Grabow Omega pipes were more bent like these are. It would be perfect.

Jiminy I think the softy is a good idea to go with, you could send it to Walker Briar Works here http://www.walkerpiperepair.com/ and have them fix the stem; well replace the stem, for you. They have several materials and finishes to choose from, including Cumberland.

I like them since I'm more of a clencher. I have one that's fairly small, and while I like it to a point the issue I find is it's a gurgler. That moisture gets trapped in the bend and it always seems to happen when there's not a pipe cleaner to be found! My Savinelli performs better but it's got the balsa filters which helps with the excess moisture, it just has a huge bowl on it...not that I'm complaining, just need a longer block of time to smoke it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The bowl on my Savinelli 614 is pretty big; 0.75" wide and 1.625" deep, so I need to have some time on my hands to enjoy this one.

Full bents are difficult to drill well. I have one Oom paul that I love everything about except that the mortise was drilled longer than it needed to be and the draft hole hits higher than the end of the mortise similar to a System design but done not purposely so it gurgles everytime, which is too bad because it's beautiful otherwise.

I like Rhodesians myself Tannhauser, my first pipe was a bent Rhodesian that I got from Sherlock's Haven in San Francisco.

Quan, that can be a nuisance having the draft hole higher than the bottom of the bowl. It might be why my Missouri Meerschaum Freehand gurgles every now and then from the English blends I smoke in it. I haven't had any issue with my Savinelli 614 yet thank God. It is a very lovely pipe :thumbup1:

I love the way all pipes look myself as well, but for my smoking pleasure, it has to be a full bent like my Savinelli 614 or even a half bent like a Dr. Grabow Omega or my first ever pipe a half bent Rhodesian.

Hey I used to go there. Is it true they've closed?

Love the look of full bent pipes, but didn't have many (back when I smoked a pipe). The gurgling was my issue, too.

I don't have a full bent, but a couple that would probably be considered 3/4 and various other degrees of bent pipes, I like them very much. I have straight pipes as well, but prefer a jaw hanger of some description.

Yeah, unfortunately they have indeed closed. A smoke shop called The Huminor is now there. It's alright, it's just no where near as good as when it was Sherlock's Haven. At least they still sell the Sherlock's Haven blends.
