Fromm Strops?

I would get the Filly and save up for a good strop like a Tony Miller, Hand American, SRD, etc. I also have a Dovo in that price range and while good its nowhere near my TM.

I would get the Filly as well. My first strop was an Illinois 827 with a linen component and it worked fine. Some of the experienced members like Glen have this strop and recommend it for that price range. Mine got the job done, but the leather was shrinking and warping so I sent it back to the vendor and got a refund. I then bought a TM strop and practice strop.

I would start with the Filly though and even Tony Miller recommends it and stated to me that it is a good piece of leather for the money.

Save your money and get a nice Tony Miller strop once you know your sticking with straights.

Cool guys thanks for the advice. I'll get a filly and put the Tony Miller on the christmas list. Since were on the subject anyone got a used filly? :wink2:

They come up now and again on the BST, but to be honest, they make really nice travel strops, so I'm keeping mine for the road.

Hadn't even thought of using it as a travel strop. I'll keep my eyes on BST, not in a huge hurry my razor still hasn't arrived and I will have to get it honed after it does.

Speaking of horse butts…
TM sells at a small price practice strops. I haven't got one but they get good reviews as well.

Thanks Kees, but they are sold only with the fancy strops as an extra.

I'd start with a Filly if you need something right away.

There's nothing wrong with the Illinois strops. I have a vintage 127 and a current 827 that have served me well. I would easily recommend them and have no complaints. Tony makes great stuff but I'm not sure they're the best choice for a first strop.
