From Weishi to Merkur Progress

I just order a Merkur Progress today. I have been using a Weishi razor for about three months now (it was my first DE razor). With the Weishi, I still get irritation on the neck, no matter how slow or little pressure I use. I have had decent luck with feather blades, but still getting redness on the neck.

After reading all of the discussions here, I am convinced I need a more aggressive razor....so I ordered an adjustable so I could experiment a little....

I was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts about my decision...

Will I see a difference? was it a waste of money? I can't wait until it arrives this week...

I started with a Parker 96R and had the same problems you had. The razor was too mild, so I order a Merkur Progress and dial it up to 3 and I have been getting BBS almost every time without any nick or irratatioin.

The Progress is a great razor worth the price.

that is great news! thanks!

I used my new Progress today...

All I have to say is........WOW!

There is no doubt in my mind now that this is a far superior razor to the Weishi. Don't get me wrong, the weishi was a great learning razor. But for my beard, it just didn't cut it:lol:

The progress plowed through and I barely even felt it cutting the hair. The weishi would pull, even with a feather blade.

I have little to no irritation on my neck today...which was a common problem I was having with the weishi as I had to take about 4 - 5 passes to get it "socially acceptable".

I'll never go back!

The Progress is a great little shaving machine. The other thing you may find with it is to adjust the settings a bit for differrent types of blades. For example When I use Crystals or Personna (red pack) I keep it at #3. If I'm Shaving with a Feather , I find 2 1/2 to be good for the first couple of shaves. YMMV it also depends where the razor is at zero (fully tightened down). Mines at the + mark.

I think the Progress is a great razor. If you really like it, shoot Mer a PM and get it modified to a Mergress. Probably my favorite razor in my rotation.

What setting works best for you after moving on from a realtively mid Weishi?

well...seeing as I have only shaved with the Progress once so far, I don't really know how to answer that. However, I was eager to jump right in and experience some aggression. With a Feather blade, I set it to 3.5 for the first pass. Then I bumped up to 4 for the second and touch up. (as a point of reference, when I dial all the way down with the blade loaded, the setting is right on the "1".

I know some people would advise against this for a Progress newbie...but it worked fine for me.
