I bought a new grind 8/8 from shavingshop.com. This is a razor that was ground by someone at Dovo from old Henckels blanks and then put in custom scales. I chose the black micarta.
I heard quite a bit about difficultly on honing the Friodur. To be honest, the best advice I found was "less is more". The razor as purchased was not shave ready. So I went through the following:
1. 1200K DMT - 30 passes (pass HHT, TPT, and microscope)
2. 4000K Norton - 40 passes (pass HHT, TPT)
3. New "Escher" w/ Slurry - 40 passes
4. New "Escher" w/ Water - 30 passes (pass HHT, TPT)
5. 60 on leather
6. 10 on CrOx
7. 5 on .25 diamond
2 shaves later the edge as refined a bit during use and is very sharp and smooth. I really had to learn to listen to feedback with this razor. I have a tendency to go too steep and this razor lets you know right away that is not a good idea. The tone of the razor changes to a really harsh sound and you can feel more of a coarseness to the shave. Shallow up a bit and it is back to a comfortable shave.
Overall, I really like this razor. The big 8/8 is a fun size.
