fountain pen story

Yesterday I received a British Parker Duofold with [factory] 1.2mm oblique stub nib that I bought from Greg Minuskin. I emailed him this story last night after getting back from dinner. He has posted it on his website so I thought I'd post it here also. Enjoy!

"So tonight I go out to dinner with my wife (rare night without the kids). When the bill comes, I hand the waiter a credit card. He returns with the receipts and a disposable pen and heads off to tend to another table. I set the ballpoint aside and pull out my newly received Duofold with oblique stub nib. I enter a tip amount, total and sign. I show it to my wife saying, “doesn’t this stub nib writing look beautiful?” She, of course, rolls her eyes and agrees (she has had quite some time to put up with and reinforce my idiosyncrasies). I put my pen away. We take our time enjoying the last of our bottle of wine. The waiter returns and asks if he can take the receipt. He picks it up, glances at the receipt, sees the writing, stops in his tracks and says, “wow. that’s a nice pen.” My wife says to the waiter, “you just made his day.” She was correct…

It is the "small" things in life that makes me (us) happy. This sounds just like my wife. It is always nice when some one else appreciates our idiosyncrasies.

Great story, I've come to realize that most of us, given time and the ability to relearn, would go back to the way things were done before we were bombarded with cheap knockoffs. Sometimes things just work right the first time.

I would imagine that a lot of people think fountain pens aren't being made anymore. ( like DE's As well ) It's only because we have been suckers for advertising the newest super pen, or buzzing razor.

Now go back and convert that waiter to FP'S :biggrin1:

You're welcome. What really made my day was the fact that the waiter was reacting to the look of the writing on the receipt, not the pen itself. I had just said something about it to my wife, that the line produced by the oblique stub was very striking. It was funny how it caught the waiter's attention. He was in the middle of one of those waiter moves--sweep over to the table, grab the receipt, pivot and dash off urgently to the next thing--and he stopped dead in his tracks.

Hahaha, your wife is awesome, what a great response and a fun time out with a great ending,

thanks for sharing Chris

Now half as wise
Idiosyncrasies. I like it. My wife has several other adjectives to describe my hobbies, activities and habits. I think I detect some pride in her voice, though, when I overhear her tell someone that "he writes with a fountain pen and shaves with a straight razor!"

Fridays are Fishtastic!
I often get comments when I write with an italic nib- the line variations impress people. Mono-thickness lines are boring.
