What's new

found some cigars in the fridge

Eh... I'd be a little worried. The refrigerator, contrary to popular belief, can be quite a drying environment for cigars. I'd say let them sit on the counter for a day then put them in the humidor for a least a week or two before trying them out. That way you'll slowly add humidity back to the sticks and MAYBE get them back into a nice smokeable state.

They have been in there since March. Do you think that they are any good?

Thanx!!!
Charlie

If they were good cigars when they went into the fridge and kept in an airtight container (i.e., tupperware), then they should be good.

If they are feeling too dry; you can place them into your humidor, place them into a ziplock with a piece of damp paper towel or if it is very humid where you are (as it is here at the moment) you could let one sit out and rehydrate naturally

Give one a test drive and find out

+1. Bring 'em up slow and if they don't crack or unwrap themselves, give it a shot!

Be careful to watch them as they sit in the humidor. It is possible for the natural bacteria found in tobacco to go dormant in the fridge and after you take them out they grow like crazy. It is a funny but that bacteria and mold just doesn't smoke well... You would think it would add a peet flavor but alas those buggers just want to make you ill. (Not common, but do be careful) it will be evident by the surface growth. If you see nothing you should be in the clear. Ahhh prokaryotic cells....if only you could be trained.

When I found them they were in the cellophane wrapper inside a little wooden box. They are very dry. I wet some paper towel with water from the fridge door & put that in a rubbermaid container with the two remaining cigars sitting on top & put that back into the fridge. How long do you gentleman think I should let them sit before i should disturb them?

Thanx!!!
Charlie

Go for 2 weeks, I do not have a lot of experience with this method but I usually get good results with rehydration over a 2 week period. Best of luck!

just a side note, I would use distilled water if you got it

I know that I should use distilled water, but at this point in time, water from the fridge door is the best that I can manage. We have a water softener in the basement along with a filter down there & a filter on the fridge. I think that I should be fine.

i forgot to mention that I trying something similar, I had a full box that I found completely dried out in my dads office. but i did not want to put them with my humidor because I was afraid of mold, and i wanted to start of with higher humidity that the 70% that my humi was at. So I tossed them into a tupperware box tossed in a couple boveda seasoning packs. Left it for a 2-3 weeks, then swapped it for 72% boveda packs and they have been in there for about another 2 months. So far they are starting to look good, there are a few cracked ones but I think I might be able to save the bulk of them.
