What's new

Five minutes makes a big difference

I just used Ogallala Bay Rum Aftershave for the first time and when I opened it and smelled it I almost didn't use it because I thought the smell was overwhelming. I tried it anyway and after five minutes went by I have totally changed my mind. Though it is a bit strong at first, after a short time it settles into a very nice, spicy scent. It soothes well after a shave as well.

Does it have any clove notes to the scent? I've become a big fan of bay rum, but I hear that many of them use clove in the mix...

It's pretty clovey, that's what made me think it was overwhelming. Once it settles though it really is a nice scent.

They are on the list to obtain and try, but with the clove in them, they've moved down the list below other things currently. lol

Love the Ogallala AS and especially the way my skin feels shortly after applying it. I have 8oz bottles of BR, Limes & Peppercorn and BR, Sage & Cedar and will be picking up the 8oz bottle of straight BR when my samples run out. The BR & Sandalwood has the strongest scent of the 4 AS and longest lasting and for that reason I don't use it as much. But I did give a bottle of that one to my son-in-law last Christmas because my daughter liked it. I love the scent of cloves. It takes me back 50-60 years to staying with my favorite grandmother. She rolled her own cigarettes while chewing on cloves and Bazooka bubble gum and reading pulp westerns.

There are times when I have the urge to use one or the other Pinaud aftershave, but want to lessen the initial really major hit of scent; I mix some WH in the palm of my hand to dilute the Clubman or Virgin Island Bay Rum, and it's then less overpowering.

That's an idea. I can also PIF the ones I don't like or that have too much clove in them. I maybe an oddball here with this, but I do not have/use any WH. If I hit an AS I like but want to mellow, I'll pick some up.

OK, I ordered the Bonanza pack, and it's on it's way. lol

Remember to shake them well. The oils separate.

I always mix WH with Aqua Velva and sometimes WH with Irisch Moos to lessen those scents. With Ogallala, I'll mix the regular Ogallala BR and BR/Sandalwood together which also works.

I started using Witch Hazel all over my face a few weeks before being told my peach fuzz violated the school dress code, and I had to shave it off. I'd started having complexion problems, particularly on my forehead. I was told to cut back on all sweets, and on hair lotions with oils (Wildroot Cream Oil), and most carbonated drinks, which used a ton of corn sugar syrup. WH was part of my routine to dry out the oiliness, and has been part of the shave routine for very close to 59 years (next month, I think).

In the opposite direction, while I do not find the scent of Dickinson's to be objectionable in the least, it takes no more than a mere few drops of any aftershave added to it to neutralize its natural, very weak and very short-lived scent.
