For all you tallow friends out there I thought I might bring to your attention to the fact that Jorunn Hernes of Fitjar Sâpekokeri in Norway has been developing her own tallow soap: http://www.fitjarsoap.no/ I have been corresponding quite a lot with her during the last few months and in one letter, I casually asked her about her views on the use of tallow in soaps. To my delight, she said that she did not have any problem with a by-product from animal slaughter being put to good use. She also shares my view that it does not make environmental sense to replace tallow with palm fats which quite possibly come from palm trees planted on what used to be rainforest.
As a result of this and probably other peoples' letters she decided to make a few batches of tallow soaps which I have had the pleasure of testing. The version on the home-page is on its way to me as we speak.
The one I have tested easily gave a rich albeit slightly thin and bubbly lather if you compare it to for example Tabac. The shave with it was very slick and cushy and the moisturisation is fabulous. I will post a review of it once I have tried the next version.
