Fishing Atlantic Coast

I did some surf fishing this week while on vacation in Emerald Isle, NC. We caught a lot of bluefish but also pulled in a couple black drums and a lizard fish. What a great time, surf fishing is the greatest , you never know what you are going to bring in.

I have spent many days and nights waist high in the surf on the beaches of Long Island, Jersey and, yes, even New York City (Rockaway in Queens or on Staten Island). I have pulled in stripers, blues, fluke, and once, a weakfish. It is too much work for me now - I prefer to go out jigging on daytime party boats out of Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn - they take you right to where the fish are and I almost always come home with a striper or two and a bunch of blues once the fall run starts. That, Football season and the Yankees in the playoffs are the three reasons I look forward to October!

That's always a good time, and I always finish it off with a plate of fried calamari at Randazzo's.

my buddies went out for Blues last night from Belmar NJ, I was supoosed to go but work beckoned and, frankly, our last trip out of Belmar wasn't very fruitful.

the total catch among the 4 friends that went was 65 blues (and several other assorted species). the total boat catch above 500.

obviously they hit a school and just followed it.... took the boat up towards NYC and hit the school

::sigh:: my luck LOL at least they are dropping some filets off tonight or tomorrow. gonna soak em in milk, season and lightly floor em (may try flax as I'm on paleo diet - but heck I can cheat a bit) and fry those suckers up!

and to the OP, I'm a trout hunter mostly... small fly rods (3weights preferred) in the PA freestone and limestone streams.... I always know what I'm going to catch (with the occasional chub or small mouth to shock me) but i usually fish to trout I see rising. I've only recently got into surf or offshore fishing... and I agree, half the fun is never knowing what you're going to catch!

When you hit a school of blues the only limiting factor is how fast you can reel them in.

I pretty much can't stand eating bluefish, except for the delicious cheeks.

the cheeks are the best!!! same with nearly any fish - or mammal for that matter (well bacon rocks too)

that's why i soak em in milk... makes them much more edibly enjoyable :)

hoping to take a Tuna trip soon... now THAT will be an adventure!

We pan fried some of the blues. They are delicious, melt in your mouth. Didn't think about the cheeks. We'll have to try the cheeks with tomorrows catch. Last day before heading home.

the cheeks and the collars are my favorites :)

as with most fish, the most flavorful cuts are those and the belly muscle. have fun fishing! may duck out to catch/release a few trout if I can swing it :)

As a grad student, I had a deal with one of the Labor Historians in my dept. I'd catch the fish and he'd smoke 'em for half. Any oily fish smoked gets transformed from Yech! to Yum! overnight. I caught shad in the Connecticut and blues in Rhode Island surf and after Bruce was done smoking 'em up, they were as good as anything you'd get in a NY deli. Simply fantastic.

Of course, I would never do that with a striper. Too many other wonderful choices.

Bacon wrapped fried calamari.

bacon wrapped ANYTHING works just fine! I believe it was your custom title at the tie I became active here "Just rub some bacon on it" words of wisdom LOL

ohhh stripers - that's a whole other fishin and cookin tale :)

for the blues I keep the oily dark meat on em until I filet them. cook em both separate usually, but iA love strong oily fish like mackeral. I've an iron stomach, well lubed w bacon.

but think I may try smoking the oily cuts today as I filet/fry the back meet when I get my delivery ... which shoulda been hear by now

he's bringing 12 fish (24 filets) <looking at watch>

My son and I have just started getting in to surf fishing this year after moving to Delaware. There is definitely a learning curve, but we are having a great time with it in the Delaware Bay area.

Bacon Wrapped Strippers! oh wait

hehehehe and Paleo friendly, as cavemen ate em too - rimshot - oh the entendres never stop here lol. :001_cool:

have you gotten into crabbing yet? think the season runs through November if I recall. it's a no brainer, get a funky ( meaning waaay past freeze by date) chicken leg and tie it into a crab trap and let the little creatures do what they do.

Of course, in DE, you can stop by most grocery stores and seafood outlets and crab shacks and buy bushels of Hardshells fairly inexpensively. The Jimmy's are generally what I get (male crabs) If you are near Delaware city, I can vouch for Kelly's crabshack. stop by to get some big, sumptuous and perfectly seasoned Jimmy's to eat in or to go .... they also have a discount for active duty and vets to boot :)

there are hundreds of mom & pop crab shacks throughout MD & DE.

I just ordered some Jumbo hardshells for my dad and I from www.crabplace.com - they arrived yesterday (got em pre-seasoned but they do ship live) and I'll be heading over to the 'rents to enjoy a crustaceous dinner this evening w pops.

Also, just got the Blues dropped off about an hour or so ago. He must've brought 10-12 lbs+ thankfully he put 4 filets per bag, so I can freeze some.
already have a half dozen filets soaking in milk.

mmmmm. Now i just need some bacon.
