First Straight Shave

Well, had my first straight shave today. I'm jumping in with both feet, going straight from cartridges to straights. I was looking and posting in the BST here, but after talking to a few guys at work found a razor. A guy I work with shaves with straights and gave me a Boker King Cutter that he wasn't using for really cheap. I ordered some other stuff online, and I'm all set.

I started out with a nice hot shower to get myself all prepped. I used Proraso shaving cream worked up in a lather with a Simpson B4 badger brush. I got a decent lather, definitely need to work on it but it wasn't bad. I let that sit for a minute or so on my face, and lathered up again. Then came the fun part.

I have a beard. I usually only shave from my jawline down, and my mustache. So I thought this would pose some problems, but I went for it anyway. I started at my neck and shaved up to the jawline, wtg. I was going pretty good but then had to cross over, and after some stumbling I know I'll get a good way eventually.

Then I went up to under my nose, started at my nose and went down, wtg. So far so good, a little pulling but I attributed that to improper angle since when I lifted off and restarted the stroke it would be fine. I was trying to figure a lot out at once, how to stretch my face, how to hold the blade and not break my fingers, etc. haha.

So, I lather up and I figure I'll take one more pass. The first went so well, just a little pulling but nothing to complain about. So I go for it.

I start from my jawline and go down, ATG. All good. Just had some trouble figuring out how to hold my hand. Then comes the mustache area. Tried using my left hand to go from my lip up. I sliced across, trying like Chimensch did in this http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=136249 video. Oh well, learned on that one.

After that, I finished up and figured I wouldn't press my luck with a XTG take. I splashed on some thayers superhazel for good measure and called it done. Looking at it now, it's pretty good. There are some spots that I know was due to technique, and if I run my hand xtg I feel some stubble but I didn't want to press the issue.

Lessons learned : Slow down, more lather, watch the angles.

Congrats!!

+1 on slowing down. Don't worry if it's long right now, you will get faster without noticing it!

Congrats on your 1st shave. Enjoy the adventure; there something new to learn everyday. I am on about straight shave 5-6, and can already see improvements. :w00t:

Congrats on your first shave!! I only have three shaves under my belt but it gets better with every shave!!

Shave #2

Same Prep
Hot Shower
Proraso cream with a b4 brush

Lathered up, much better lather. One pass wtg, everything went pretty well.

Lathered up, and instead of going atg like I did last time, this time I went xtg. This seemed to work better as it took off more hair than the atg pass did last time. Then I finished up with an atg pass. Still have iritation on my lip area I passed over by accident and re-irritated.

I don't think I'm stropping my blade sharp enough? I can barely get a hanging hair to cut. I have to have a little tension on the hair to get it to zing off. Guess I need to edumacate myself on stropping. I think I'm getting it better now though. I get that nice 'sound' as I've heard it explained here.

My buddy at work is going to show me how he shaves tomorrow. I'm excited, going to bring my stuff and let him give me a lesson or twenty!

Today I divided and conquered my face. I didn't get ahead of myself lathering, which seemed to help keep a fresh lather up. Next time gotta strop better and concentrate on atg pass angles.

Every newbie thinks their blade is not sharp enough. Assuming that your blade was honed by a respected honemeister, you should have nothing to worry about.

If your blade cuts parts of your face really well, and others not so much, that is a technique issue, and not related to the sharpness of the blade.

Also, as I understand it the hanging hair test is a relatively useless test of blade sharpness. If the test has any merit at all, it only has merit for the person who actually honed the blade.

You did better than I did. I think I'm going to have to take a few days off to heal. My cuts drew stares at work today, but I really want to do this and will persevere.

Well then I stand corrected. Thank you

I caught a few glances for the cut on my mustache area. One guy asked if I got into a fight with a bear. Haha. Gotta love it.

Shaved today, tried doing it pre-shower. Had good success, still having trouble getting a clean xtg on my neck. It's hard when I stretch my neck, but I'll figure out a way.

Is it normal to get some 'tension' I guess you can call it, when I lift the blade at the end of a cut? Perhaps I am not cleaning it enough, it seems in the video you guys clean your blade after only an inch or two.
