First Str8 Shave!! DFS.

I bought a Genco, shave ready straight, along with a vintage strop from Leighton a few week ago :001_cool:. I was soon to return from Iraq and had Leighton deliver to the house.... SWMBO opened the package and thought "holy smokes, what has he done this time?" I was anxious to try it out so the second day home from my return from Iraq I showered, built up a nice lather using my AOS Sandalwood soap. While I let the lather soak into my whiskers some, I slowly stropped the Genco paying very close attention to the strop tension and rolling over the spine. I did not have very high expectations, this being my first attempt at a straight. Thus, I went for par making 2 WTG and then 2 XTG. I achieved DFS with the only minor problem :thumbdown being that I'm not quite sure how to do WTG on my neck below my jawline as the grain there runs from my left ear down and around and then back up toward my right ear. XTG is simple there with the straight but I'll have to work some more on the XTG.

Overall, I'm as pleased as punch and cannot wait for my next attempt. Of course, this is a minor event compared to getting home, being able to sleep in m own bed with the loving wife, cuddling, on the couch with the kids, having a good glass of bourbon.

Congrats on the safe return, Mike! That's truly fantastic news. I can't imagine what it felt like to see those friendly faces. :biggrin1: :thumbup1:

As for the shave, a Genco is a great straight razor. Nice score. Even though my hair grows in all directions in one section of my neck, I don't worry about shaving direction. I follow suit with the rest of my neck. A really sharp blade handles it fine. Of course, my technique is pretty refined as well. With experience, you'll find the right approach. Good luck!

Mike.... Welcome Home! Chalk up your first straight razor shave being a success along with all the other wonderful things you mentioned in your original post. I can't imagine how fantastic things that we take for granted must feel for you and your family this very moment.

As for the straight razor shaving technique...sounds like you had good karma on your first go.... remember to stretch the skin and keep that blade angle.

Congrats Mike! Like with all good things in life straight razor shaving does take its time. I suffer quite the same problem as you do: My beard below the jawline does follow the same weird growth as yours. But I seem to get quite nice around it by shaving XTG there only. It's not that big of a problem.

Soon you'll see SRAD is knocking on the door  Straights are a hell lot of fun, as you'll probably know now.

Welcome home!! Congrats on the shave. I'm new to str8 shaving my self and my neck is the hardest place for the same reasons. Joel suggests in a sticky not to use your safety razor to get at those hard places in order to "learn" to get it done with a str8. For the most part I have followed that advice and my technique for my neck has greatly improved. Once again Thank You for your service it is Greatly appreciated!
