First Smoke At Work

I just got back from my first work smoke. I felt a little odd as I have never smoked my pipe at work or out in the open like that before. I loaded the bowl up with the dredded Borkum Riff mixture. I say dreaded because my first smoke with the riff was not very tastfull. I tried it again, it wasn't all that bad but def. had that cig. taste rather than a fine pipe tobacco or a good cigar. Anywho I had to try it again and I think with the proper beverage it could be ok. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions?

According to reviews, just about any other OTC is superior.

I myself really like Half and Half, Cater Hall, Price Albert, and Middleton's Cherry Blend. I haven't tried Sir Walter Raleigh yet (but have some lying in wait).

If you want something quite different that's available as an OTC, try Captain Black White/ Regular. It's dark, and smoky, kind of like espresso.

John, good suggestions, I like the sound of a good espresso. You have opened a few more options for me now the challenge is keeping this on the DL. lol

Smoking at work is no longer legal in this state unless you are working from a home office as the sole employee... Just out of curiosity- what is your office arrangement that still allows smoking? There are certainly days when I wish I could have my pipe going...

You mean you aren't even allowed to go outside on break for a smoke, anywhere in the state?

Wasn't even thinking about outside; likely due to the blizzard we had this weekend.... Outside is an interesting issue here-- there has recently been a law change in this state (ND) that requires smokers to be a certain distance from the door of any business. In the case of business in a downtown area, it is virtually impossible to do smoke in compliance because 50 feet (or whatever) from one business puts you within the range of another business...

Heh.. even in blizzard conditions here the smokers go out on break and have one fast. I notice the OP is in Virginia, I'm taking a wild guess there wasn't any blizzard where they are working to deal with. lol

I have recently discovered smoking in my garage during the blizzard this weekend-- surprisingly awesome. I normally would just go for a walk and enjoy the fresh air. I don't think I could be a "smoke break" guy; a 5/10 minute break doesn't wouldn't let me really enjoy the pipe.

I usually step out of the office for a smoke once or twice a day. It takes however long it takes because I work however long it takes to get the work done. They joys of being on salary.

At my last job there was a lot of late night work with bits and pieces being done by different groups. I'd do my part, hand off to somebody else for their part, and have them page me when they were done. I was off to the parking lot for a stroll and a smoke.

I would certainly try a variety of different tobaccos. Joining this forum has inspired me to go out and try as many different ones as I can find after a decade of smoking the same cheap arromatic. It's been fun, even if I have stumbled across a few that I wouldn't buy again, I've also come across many that I would choose to smoke frequently.

yupp VA, no blizzard to speak of unless you go to DQ. I actually surprised myself by forging out to do it at work. I think I may have smoked it faster than should be. I ended up with a little tong bite. Perhaps I need to get some chairs to to enjoy myself a little more. Green tea? would that be good to drink during a smoke? Anyway ............

My experience is pretty much any beverage you generally like, will go with most pipe tobacco's without too much issue. I can't think of any off the top of my head that would clash with each other.

I keep a clay pipe in my desk, and it is good for a five minute smoke. It has raised a couple eyebrows, at least until I explain that clay pipes were around long before briar. I do smoke a briar at lunch, though. We have a covered smoke area between our buildings- it is great when it is 110 out. Our center manager smokes cigars (he occasionally calls me down, and gives me one to smoke with him) so it is in no danger.

That's nice, it's always good to have that occasional cigar stop with the management. Many a powerful conversations have happened on a smoke break. before I started the pipe I would even go out to the smoke break area just to build relationships and network.

He is about the only managerial type I mingle with, but he is a pretty good guy. When he wants the pulse of what is going on in the center, he comes to me. He knows that, while being polite, I do not BS him. If you ask me a question, be prepared to hear what I really think.
