First Shavette shave, Wow! what a murder!

today i got a surprise in the mail; one of my long awaited package, a 2$ shavette from china.
well, disappointment didn't receive DE blade yet!

after looking at it closely, i discover that those clever Chinese installed a blade beforehand.
lucky am i?

so i disinfect it (it had some oil like substance on it), lather up and try to shave.
i got to say, quite a challenge it is. the blade was less sharp than a sheet of paper and the blade holder kept sticking to my face like fly paper. tried to re-lather and make a few more pass, it did the same effect over and over again.
either the blade dig into the skin and dont glide or the metal backbone stick. after a few attempt not to cut my nose/lip off, i gave up. threw the blade into the garbage and did the rest of the job with a cheap 2blade razor.

i guess i will have to wait a couple of days for the blade to come in the mail.

I wouldn't be shaving with anything that costs $2. Just some advice from me to you. You can take it or leave it.

Max.

For shavettes it's 90% technique. Some cheap bastid glued a DE blade to a chopstick for a 32 cent razor and still got a decent shave.

The other 10% is the blade.

Shavettes are so simple that I doubt even a $2 one could be blamed for a bad shave. It's the blade!
as above, head out and buy a decent pack of DE blades; snap one in half and go again.
shower, hot towel, pre shave oil, lather and shave! Get your technique right as well, stretch the skin properly, take your time.

i received some blade in the mail today, will try again tomorrow.
well talking about skills, i also doubt the razor is to blame.

I got moves like Jagger
Shavettes ate my face the first 3 go-arounds with them. I don't mean the first three shaves, but rather the first three "waves" of using them. Then I gave up on them and stopped using straights for about 1.5 years. When I restarted with straights last September, I tried a shavette again after having a few months under my belt. The result was some very great shaves.

Translation: Shavette problems for me were 100% user-error.

As long as a shavette holds the blade firmly and has no parts that hit you in the face is should do the job (assuming not a disasterous flex in the handle etc as well).

I have one about $2 shavette that I got bundled with blades. I get no better shave with a $10 shavette. Ergonomics and blade change easiness makes the $10 unit worth the extra money and probably lasts a lot longer though. I get better shaves with straights but that is because I'm used to them and a tool I'm not familiar with is not as easy to use.
