First Shave With The B&B Omega Boar/Mini Review

I had my first shave with my brand spankin' new Badger and Blade Omega boar brush. Yesterday when it arrived, I gave it a de-funk lathering, and I noticed that most of the tips of this had already split. I thought it felt really soft on my hand, and I thought it felt softer than my Semogues. Well, todays shave proved otherwise. It's still a bit scratchy on the face, and the knot doesn't splay much yet. This isn't a magic "broken in out of the box" brush; it's a boar brush, and like any other boar brush, it's going to need a good breaking in to open the knot and soften the tips a bit more.

While this brush is noticeably less dense than my Semogues, it doesn't suffer at all in the back bone department. Right now it's too stiff. The knot really needs to open up, and I expect that it will once it's broken in. I don't expect that this brush will turn into a floppy mop once that happens; hopefully it will be just right.

What I am really impressed by is that it lathered really well in spite of the fact that most boars are a bit lacking in this department when they are new. I had plenty of lather for three passes face lathering. Most new boars struggle to produce a good quantity of lather for at least the first few uses. Not this one. Both the de-funk lathering and today's shave proved this brush makes great lather.

I'm glad that this year's B&B Limited Edition brush is an Omega. At $20.00, it's something I can actually afford. The handle is nice, the color is nice, and I'm hoping that the knot will be just as nice once it's broken in. I haven't had an Omega in the den for a couple of years, so I don't remember how they are once broken in any more. My understanding is that Omegas break in much faster than Semogues. I've broken in two Semogues in my time wet shaving, and I'm working on a third. If Omegas do in indeed break in faster than Semogues, then I shouldn't be long before this brush reaches its potential. I'll try to post an update when that happens. In the mean time, I think this is a good brush and well worth owning. I'm glad I have one in my den.

Only joking. That pic is making me want the time to go faster. I cant wait to try it out. Thanks for the mini review. As for Omega breaking in faster, my #34 that I had for Christmas started to break in from day one. It's well on it's way to being as soft as my Two band badgers.

Stuart, i have a omega that is not getting here fast enough from the West coast.:boat:

Well guys here's what turned up this morning. As is the rule here in blighty after you shave, first the outer case to keep you guessing.

Then, BINGO! one B&B essential brush. Sweet looker from the get go. A few palm lathers with SIM and the funk has started to leave. I'll let the Omega #34 have a full dry out tomorrow and this wee babay can get all hot and lathered up on my ugly mug. SWEEEEEET!:biggrin1:

And a big thank you to the guys at West Coat shaving they even threw in a small sampler and a note saying sorry for no other samples.

Just got mine a few days ago. Warmed it up with 2 practice palm lathers with DR Harris Arlington, hoping to get rid of some funk. Let it dry for a day in between.

This morning, I couldn't wait...grabbed it, soaked it while showering. Lightly swirled it in some Jermyn St. cream. Started face lathering - not great results. I went to a bowl, added some water and BAMMMM!!! Gobs of awesome lather.

I don't think it was the brush's fault at all for the poor face lathering - I think I didn't have enough water to start with. Proceeded with my first run with a newly acquired Ikon OSS purchased from a member. Loaded with a PoliSilver SI, 3 days growth vanished. Achieved 4 wonderful passes with the new B&B Boar. It will only get better!!

I've used mine for five shaves and it is breaking in nicely. I too noticed that some of the
hairs began to split after the first hand lather. This is a fantastic brush and a steal at $20.

Here's mine destroying some Gold Dachs.

Chris, is your knot starting to open a little? I'm curious if this brush will loosen up just a little.

Tried her this morning, Arko and the Aristocrat. No problems at all, lathered straight up with big mounds of great fluffy lather, nice and thick. I'm a shower shaver and there for a face lather'er so I have a good soap, brush, lather technique. A great brush and definatley a keeper. So thats my three boar tally sorted. When will I grab a badger again? it's going to be a few months at least, this B&B brush and the #34 a month a piece each to break in, what a good way to spend ya time :biggrin1:
