What's new

first shave with new Rooney 3/1

My new 3/1 Rooney "Super" Silvertip in coral arrived from vintageblades and I got to use it for the first time this morning. After reading all the reviews I had to try a Rooney...

First off, the brush looks awesome! The coral color is just fantastic. The color looks great with the hair...a striking brush. Out of the box I noticed a lot of backbone and crazy density...so much I was worried about getting any bloom with it (I lather in a scuttle frequently although I've been face lathering more and more). Well, that fear was laid to rest after pre-soaking. It (we?) lathered some Nancy Boy cream insanely well...I mean really, really well. Bloomed out quite a bit...as much as my old medium EJ silvertip. However, when I went to apply the lather to my face is when I saw the difference: the backbone was still there. The EJ got really floppy, the Rooney blooms but keeps some backbone. I wanted something I could use with a scuttle as well as face lathering and this brush really seems like a winner. Size is good for me too.

Hard to believe this brush is this good for the price. Is it too late to declare this brush my favorite after using it only once? Maybe not...

Too late or too early?
I was looking at that same brush along with a million other Rooneys for weeks trying to decide.
I'm glad it's working well for you. I ended up going with a Rooney Limited Edition Stubby 2 Heritage and should have it next week from Vintage. Funny they call it "Limited" instead of Traditional, because it's a 3-band Heritage-grade Super (whereas the new Heritage brushes are now using the 2-band Super).
The coral handle is nice though; good choice.

You mean like this? Had it a little over 2 months & love it. I have no desire for another brush.

I just received my 3/1 in Super last week. Love the brush, very soft with plenty of backbone and very dense.I found that it does great with soaps and creates tons of lather with ease.

However, i'm having some difficulty with creams. The brush is a bit of a "lather hog" as others have put it. I have to use more cream to ensure I have enough lather for a 3-4 pass shave. I think because the brush is so dense, it doesnt give up the lather easily.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I have a 1/1 which has about the same knot. It does require a different technique than a more loosely packed brush. I found that it worked fine though. I actually had more trouble loading from a puck of soap on my first try because I'm more used to a less dense brush with a taller knot. My guess is it will take a little while to fully bloom out and will have better lather flow then.

One trick you can try, and I do this will all my brushes, is if it's hogging the lather, just squeeze it out a little (not all the way though) into the edge of your hand, between the thumb and index finger. Once you have the lather there, you can pick it up with the tips of the brush and use a paint brush motion to get it on your face.

The 3/1 Coral Super was my first brush. Love at first sight and lather. It's a regular in a crowded rotation. Hapy Shaves!
