My birthday gift just arrived today, a merkur 933cl travel razor. My initial impression was that it was tiny, but once I put it together it wasnt too small. The shave: VDH soap, tweezerman pure badger brush, and clubman A/S. For a small razor it shaved really well, I used the Nerkur blade it came with it, but prefer my vintage schick plus platinum blades. I've heard a lot of people say its too small or that there's no point, but I disagree. I think it's a good option for limited space travel, and overall a good shaver. And as far as the point of it goes, there isn't one. It's just something a little different. My question is about blades however. I was excited to see that it came with a Merkur blade, but when I tried it, it felt like I was shaving with a rusty tin can lid. Does merkur have good blades, and that's just a cheap sample blade, or are all their blades pretty much no good? I know it's a YMMV kinda thing, but I just wanted some feed back on them from some long time users. I'm currently using vintage schick plus platinum blades I inherited, is there anything close to those?

Merkur blades are not favored by most although YMMV. Personally, I think they are not worthy of the Merkur name, and are an embarrassment to the term 'made in Germany'.
I highly recommend you get a sampler pack from any of the Vendors listed in B+B. A good blade will make any razor shave better!

Merkur blades have been around for a while. I find that they aren't as sharp and are more forgiving than some others. That combined with the fact that your travel razor doesn't way much maybe why you didn't get a great shave. I have a small vintage travel razor and don't ever use it. It just doesn't feel right and I don't get good shaves. I don't seem to notice my full size DE taking up that much more room. The razor isn't the biggest thing in my toiletry bag.
The problem ain't the sharpness, its the outrageous price. One can purchase 300 (Astra, shark ss, Wilkinson) or 200 (Perma-sharp, Crystal, Feather) for the price of 100 Merkrap.
