First Shave with a Feather Blade

Yesterday I was browsing Executive Shaving for yet another cream and ended up purchasing Arran Aromatics Driftwood Cream, along with it I decided to take the plunge and got a 10 pack of Feathers. I'll post links in case anyone wants to follow this set-up.

Balm (Just to add a nice lime scent) http://www.crabtree-evelyn.co.uk/men/mens-shaving/west-indian-lime-after-shave-balm-100ml-79961.html

I was extremely careful as I didn't want any cuts so my neck area is still a bit rough after two passes, but even with Personna blades my technique needs a little work. I can get close but I always end up irritating the skin a tiny bit. Overall I was impressed, Personna blades in comparison do tug the skin a bit and the Feathers don't do that at all and I can tell they are sharper, even my first stroke felt smoother.

My first (DE) shave ever was with an EJ DE89L and a feather blade. I was scared stiff I was going to cut my cheek off the whole time after reading everyone's posts on how sharp it was, so I was very, very careful. I ended up with a bbs shave and no nicks, and I'm somewhat loathe to try out anything else after such excellent results. Everyone should try it with a feather at least once.

If you do like them, I know you can buy 100/200 packs on ebay quite cheap. Something I'm considering doing once I've run through the dozen samplers I got with my razor.

That balm from crabtree evelyn also looks quite nice, how do you find it? There's something about the scent of lime while shaving that really does it for me.

Ah, the Feather. If that's the right blade for you they can't be beat. Feather's are ment to be used, not feared. Just use them like any other blade.

The balm is good, I tend to use it along with another product though as my bottle was smaller, costing £12 from a C&E shop. The scent doesn't linger too long either which can be good or bad depending.

I used my first feather yesterday morning in a merkur 34c on a 2 day beard. Great shave on 2 passes with no nicks or weepers. I was very impressed. This morning I was traveling for work and used a gillette blue blade in my gillette fatboy razor set at 4 on a 1 day beard and I had no less then 5 weepers. Not sure if it was the blade, razor, both or my technique. Probably a combination of all of the above, but I have not had good luck with the Fatboy with the other 2 razor blades I used either. I am not ready to use it with a feather blade on a work day.

I don't think I will use feathers real soon as I only started 10 days ago and went from 1st shave with a blue Persona to Derby's once all the cuts, the rash and the pink face I had for 3 days subsided!

I will stick with Derby's for a couple of months as they are more forgiving during the training period ... but watch this space...

Maybe move up in steps. I went from Derby to Personna Reds and then to Feather.

SO I started with a Merkur blade, using an Astra SP now. I am interested in trying out a bunch of new blades since I am new to DE.

What else do you recommend that falls between the Astra and eventually the Feather? I am looking for less aggressive (than Feather) to more aggressive (than Astra).

I am not sure that sharper is worse. I have not been DE shaving long and found that the feather was better than then the astra which was better then the gillette blue and the gillette 7 o'clock (yellow packet). I am awaiting an order of persona med blades which reviews say are as sharp as feathers and even smoother. The dull blades cause me to make more passes and press harder causing more weepers and nicks. This has been my limited experience.

Blades (from what I've seen here) differ from person to person. I have never had any problems with Derby blades performance wise, yet some people here won't touch them. Some people find Feather over-rated or too aggressive for their skin type. The best thing to do is find a sample pack at a shaving site or even Amazon.

Toothpick

Needs milk and a bidet!
my blade of choice these days.

To many rookies have gave them a bad rep, especially amongst folks that have never used them. everyone seems to be terrified of them.

They are a sharp blade and less forgiving then others. But in the right hands and razor you will get an amazing shave every time.

I tried a Feather for funsies. Very smooth, drama free shave and extremely close. Just so happened to break out in weepers at the end for some reason..couldn't imagine why..:001_rolle

i moved on to them after starting out on timor blades for a few months. I personally believe that it really isn't the ideal choice for beginners but if you pretty much handle the technique of a safety razor you shouldn't fear them either

I'm not sure if this necessarily falls in between the two for you (I just ordered my first pack of Astra SPs and I'm awaiting delivery, so can't completely compare just yet), but I like the Gillette Silver Blues and think they're sharp yet smooth. Not as sharp as the Feather blades but still get the job done. I would say they're worth trying out as the quality seems to be great as well. I'm currently switching between the two depending on what type of shave I'm in the mood for at the time. Super BBS, I go Feather now, but for a DFS that's relaxing and requires a little bit less concentration I go with the Gillette Super Blue blade. Looking forward to my Astra SP shipment arriving, have a Feather loaded up right now and the Astra SP is on deck! Hope this helps somewhat...

I did the same thing and then found myself getting a little bit of irritation with the feather, so I went to the Astra SPs for the time being. Once I get used to the change in my shave routine, I'm going to try the Feathers again. They seemed great!
