First Pu-er

A woman I work with just got back from a vacation to Asia. She is Taiwanese and loves tea.

I am the only other tea drinker in the office, although I stick to the basics (Stash Earl Grey ). She brought me back a tin of pu-er, which contains a bunch of individual cakes. The only English on the tin says Colourful Mini Gold Pu'er Tea. Yunnan broad leaf sunshine withering tea, KunMing, Yunnan, China. Grade: Qualified.

Just had some tonight, it was really good. This could become very dangerous for my pocketbook... I have started researching tea cakes, teapots, etc.

Oh yes. The teas you can get from Asia (Japan, China, Taiwan, etc.) are a huge step beyond what you can get in your average American supermarket. A good smorgasboard to try would be a cooked pu-er, sheng pu-er, an oolong like a Tie Kwan Yin (Iron Buddha), and say a green tea like a Dragonwell. All of them are quite different from each other and present a wide gamut of tastes. And even within these types you can find a large range of flavors and quality.

In my experience, all of the little mini tuos have been ghastly.

Pu'er should not come in a tin.
