First FP questions

I have been looking at getting a fountain pen and really like the feel and look of the Lamy Safari after borrowing one from a coworker.

I prefer to write with blue ink, but have to use black ink for signing contracts. Can I get away with one pen and the 2 inks or do I need separate pens? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but just concerned about mixing inks.

I plan on purchasing the cartridge converter too so I can use bottle ink.

Thanks I'm advance for any and all help!

you just have to flush between inks,.. as long as that isnt a pain in the but for you then one pen works great

The Lamy Safaris are quite affordable for you to get two pens. They are great writers. i have to agree with Vlad, it is a pain, so just get two of them.

Just started using my new Lamy Safari and I must say I really like the flair that the 1.1 italic nib adds to my failry lackluster writing. If you use both colors on a daily basis you'll really need to have two dedicated pens, you wouldn't want to have to flush multiple times a day.

Thank you for all the help. I ordered a Lamy Allstar and a bottle of Noodler's black ink. I figured I could use black ink for the time being and if I enjoy writing with a FP than I can get a second pen for blue ink.

I think FPs could get addicting very quickly! I already have a wishlist that includes 4 other pens and a lot of sample inks.

Trust me when I say....... "you are so screwed!" :001_tt2:

About a year ago I was in the same boat as you... got my first fountain pen, a White Cross Solo with gold F nib. Now, I'm sitting here looking at over 2 dozen FPs, a dozen bottles of ink, a whole box full of samples...... the list goes on. There should be disclaimers on everything fountain pen related - "WARNING - VERY ADDICTIVE!" :biggrin1:

Have fun!

I know I am in trouble because I already have my 2nd order set and ready to place after I get this one that hasn't even shipped yet! I am bad about ADs when it comes to new(and old) hobbies. I better start looking at those 10 pen slot cases.

This might be a dumb question, but i can't find the answer. If I am just using the same ink(in this case Noolde's black) is it ok to fill the FP if there is still ink in it? I am just wondering if I am running low and know I am going to be writing a lot that day away from home can I just "top it off" before I head out? Do I have to worry about messing up the ink in the bottle by doing this?

Now half as wise

No problem. Same ink, same bottle. Fill away.

I'll occasionally use the same ink a pen for several fillings, but even then it's a good idea to periodically flush it and clean everything out, even if you refill it with the same ink.

Thanks Mark.

For some great video tutorials for an "intro to fps" you should check out the "Fountain of Knowledge" page at gouletpens.com. I'm still only using my Pilot Varsity, but I feel like I know a lot more about pens after watching those videos then going to a local pen store and trying some out.

I watched a number of the videos last night and there is a ton of great information on there.

The Al-Star is a nice pen. No, I did not misspell- Al is the periodic table symbol for aluminum.

Welcome to the club. :sneaky2:

I prefer to write with blue ink, but have to use black ink for signing contracts.

When I started, I wanted black for everyday notes and 'I can tell which one ain't the photocopy' blue for signing stuff. Just a thought.

IMHO, a daily workhorse pen does better with a somewhat finer nib, and a 'signature pen' with a larger nib ... so you can make a nice big, bold signature. (Someone can remind us of the John Hancock quote ...)

Now, well ... let's just say it's a lot more complicated.

I am the one who has been misspelling it. Thanks for pointing that out to me and can't believe I didn't catch that earlier.

Thank you. The Medium Nib is nice, but I can see where a fine nib would be better for every day use. I have been writing non stop and working on my penmanship since I received the pen the other day.
I am already looking to order a second pen with a fine nib and blue ink.

Here is what I received the other day...

Easy enough to do. IMO, it is harder to intentionally misspell things-and Al-Star is intentional.
