What's new

First FP on the way! Ink suggestions please.

Today I popped my FP cherry and ordered a Shaeffer 300 in Blue Swirl. I've never used a FP before and will primarily be using it at work with a moleskine journal. What is a nice black ink to start off with that is a good paring with the paper in the moleskines? Pen should be here in a day or two, so I'll post pics when I have it. Forewarning: my penmanship sucks :)

Many say Noodler's Black works well with many papers. I've never used it, but I like our B&B 5 o'clock shadow, or Heart of Darkness. There are many black inks out there, as well as other colors.
Enjoy your new pen!

I've found that Noodler's X-feather works quite well on the Moleskine paper, if that's not to your liking then I would second the recommendation for Noodler's HOD.

I like Noodler's Polar Black. Very durable, good flow without soaking pages, and a nice even and deep glossy black.

I'm using B&B's Five O'Clock Shadow in a couple different pens in a Moleskine pocket journal and have no problems. Alas, that is my only black ink at the moment.

Got the pen today! The marbled blue body looks great. The supplied blank ink cart works ok on standard copy paper, but it didn't work well on the moleskine paper. For my first FP, id say the nib feels noce. Doesnt seem scratchy to me. Definitly having to correct my grip after 20+ years of writing wrong, but it feels more natural writing with the FP. Here are some iPhone pics I snapped of it.

Nice pen. Enjoy it! The feathering I get with most inks on Moleskine paper has put me off using it for good. Try Claire Fontaine, Rhodia, or even just a good heavy gauge paper from Staples (others can comment of decent paper to get at the big box stores, as I only use the first 2 I listed). Rhodia makes a ton of different pads, journals, etc., so you'll probably find something that works well for you. Also, take a look at blue/black inks. I like them better than straight blue or black, but that's just me. Pelikan, Parker Quink, Visconti, and Noodler's all make good ink.

I have found that vintage Schaffer Skrip permanent jet black works well on my moleskine note pads. Also I like the parker quink in my fine nibs. I switched to Canson recycled XL sketch paper for most all my note taking. Amazing flow and saturation, very low to no feedback even on tweaked nibs. Many of the art/drawing papers work exceptionally well and plenty of larger chain stores will put them on close out pricing regularly. I picked up a 15"x10" spiral bound hard cover book of blank Canson paper for $8 this spring. Put a line guide behind the page and it makes for wonderful letter paper.

Thanks for the info! I went by Staples today to get a jar of Quink but they were all sold out, so I guess I'll order some ink online. Noodlers Definitly seems to be a forum favorite, so that will probably be my route. I did test out a couple journals while I was there and ended up settling on a hard cover spiral bound M series by Staples. The pen produced smooth well saturated lines with very little ghosting and no bleed thru.

Next time you're at Staples, pick up some Eco-paper notebooks. I don't normally buy into the "green" stuff, but it's renewable, cheap, and some of the best feeling paper I've ever used, to boot (admittedly, I haven't even begun to scratch upper tier papers yet.)

Will do, thanks!

Beware the cotton paper- it is REALLY nice

+1 on Rhodia paper. I have quite a few FPs and have not found any inks that don't feather on Moleskine paper. A really nice black that I use is Private Reserve Velvet Black. It's not a jet black but is more of a soft "flat" black.
