What's new

first dumb question

I ordered my first DE, a Merkur 34c, and some blades. The blades are the Wilkinson Sword and Merkur Platinum, both recommended by the seller. Am I giving myself a good start or looking for trouble?

never tried the Wilkinson Sword but Merkur blades have a pretty bad reputation around here, although they do work for some. I personally like Red Pack Personnas, Dorcos and Gillette 7 o'clocks. your best bet would be to order a blade sampler pack from westcoastshaving.com and try out a few and see what works for you

First, welcome to B&B!

Second, you can't help but have a good start just by starting. Just remember, do good prep on your face with at least a pre-soak to soften the beard and use a nice lather. Then use strokes letting the razor do the work. You don't need the pressure needed with those multi-blade monstrosities. Just be patient and enjoy.

Then, venture out and try some vintage Gillette razors where it all began and was perfected.

Welcome to B&B!

I only tried the Brazilian Wilkinson sword so far. They're ok but not more. The other Wilkinson sword are supposed to be much better.

Merkur is average. As mentionned, a razor blade sample pack is a must. You should be all right to start with those two.

Hi and welcome, i am 1 of the few who actually like the mekur blades and always have them in stock and i like the wilkinsons just as much, if not more, enjoy your shave.

Being new to DE shaving I recommend, to focus on technique and the lather. Remember to keep your face wet before lathering up for a new pass.

Good luck

are either of these shops decent? i've only ever ordered from WCS and classicshaving.com.

Just bought a Omega 21047 from Gary @ Shoebox. Great Communication and Service. He made sure the brush was bubblewrap inside it's travel container so it wouldn't get knocked around on it's long trip down under.

Only thing is I suspect he might have initially mixed up Tasmania for Transylvania or Tanzania for postage

Thanks for the info everyone. I purchased the Haslinger shaving soap in the aloe scent, my brush is a cheapo from the local drug store. Not sure if I,m willing to drop $30.00 or more on a brush just yet, however, the more I read about it the more I see the differences.

Also, Most of the advice here recommends to pick one razor and blade and stick with it until I get my technique down. Thats why I shied away from the sampler packs. Also the Wilkinsons on that site are the Wilkinson sword classic from Germany, the Merkurs are the Mekur Super Platinum.
