What's new

Finally tried the Knize Ten and other thoughts

This is a truly manly man scent. Just not for me. I can see why so many wetshavers love this one. I'm just not into leather scents. But I was not disgusted by it the way I was with CS 88 and Hamman Bouquet (I know they're not leather but CS 88 at least is a big wetshaver favorite).

Also tried Bois Du Portugal and found it to smell too "mature" and old school. It is a nice scent but more ideal for an older gentleman in a nicely pressed suit.

Creed Green Valley is good. Not FBW for me but good.

I tried the entire Aqua Di Parma line and did not like any of them.

Smelled some more diptiques and I dont remember many of their names but some smelled like candles, not colognes (I know they are a candle company....and damn those candles are expensive).

Sniffed Allure Homme again (hadn't sampled it in a while) and I keep wanting to buy this again (owned it twice before many years ago) but something keeps me from moving with this. Maybe when the weather gets colder.

Interesting notes! The first time I tried Knize Ten I loved it. Then I hated it. Now I love it but I don't like to wear the EdC or the EdT. Instead, I actually like it as an aftershave best. For leather frags I like less "cured" smelling things like Cuir Ottoman and Cuir d'Iris. They smell like leathers, no doubt about it, but they are smoother.

As far as the rest, I think I understand what you mean about BdP, even though I'm sure I fit the "mature" category - most of the time at least. I've owned it and sold it twice. I recognize something in it that is good quality and construction but it's not for me. Green Valley smelled too much like GIT to me and I'd rather wear GIT so GV seems like a superfluous fragrance from Creed. Yes, they are technically different but they have a lot of similarities, too. Too many if you ask me.

I haven't tried the entire AdP line but I do love Profumo - it's a classic style green chypre. That said, there are a lot of chypres out there and this one could easily be passed in lieu of some others but if you're a fan of chypres at all the vintage (red bottle) Profumo is a must for the collection and is easily found on ebay.

I don't for Diptyques at all. Some smelled good but nothing from smelled like anything I remotely needed to own.

I also used to have a sample of Allure homme but didn't take to it. I'd say I need to revisit it and try it again, my tastes have evolved tremendously since then, but my tendency at the moment is to go the other way.

Smoother than Knize Ten?!? Heresy!

Actually, the first 20 times I smelled it, I hated it. Don't know why I kept at it. Eventually I had an epiphany about it.

Yes, K10 is an exposed male chest bulging with hair. Nothing smooth about chest hair. CO and CdI at least keep their shirt on.

I was intellectually prepared for Knize Ten when I bought it, but nothing got me ready for how it smelled the first time I sprayed it. I think I was shocked, dismayed and a little revolted at the first smell. Then, I began to like it but I couldn't imagine actually wearing it. In public. Kept at it and now I love it.

my russian wife' told me Knize 10 evoked memories of her grandmother... the pictures i have seen don't appear to suggest that connotation above; however her grandfather and father hunting out in the taiga and tundra, those guys had some chest hair and the scent they wore was more along the lines of fermented potatoes.

This.

On first spray I was overwhelmed with petrol and burning rubber notes. I literally wondered if this was some kind of joke to mess with a fragrance noob - I couldn't imagine how anyone would possibly wear that. (And that petrol/rubber note kept me from trying Bvlgari Black for years - and I like it too)

When I went back to K10 several months later I didn't get the overwhelming burning rubber smell - I'm not sure what I was interpreting that way :-/ I still got the petrol like smell but now it was balanced with leather, florals and powder. It makes me think of an old world gentleman's club with polished leather chairs, cut flowers and people fresh from the shower. The scent swirls and changes all day as the balance of the different notes morph. It's now one of my favorites although on hot days the petrol note gets too far out front and can turn this into something that's horrible. So K10 gets few or no wears in the Georgia heat from me.
