What's new

Finally got around to the merkur slant.wow

So for the last few months I've been waiting to get my hands on a merkur 37c slant razor. I finally got one. My first shave with it was after a week of hair growth. Needless to say I had a full on beard by then. The razor performed effortlessly. It hacked down the hair with absolutely no tugging or pulling what so ever. I was amazed. I had heard this razor was insanely aggressive and was terrified for my first shave with it, as ive only been DE shaving for less then a year. The first shave did yield some weepers but I finished the shave otherwise atraumatically. Run 2 still nervous about how aggressive this thing is I took things nice and slow. With the grain....WOW! I felt as if I had just started DE shaving again, I had to keep checking the sink to see if I was in-fact cutting anything. Sooo smooth. Against the grain I realized that angle is an extremely important aspect to this razor. Against the grain I felt some burn but did not slice my face up. Overall after two shaves I have to say this is by far my favorite of the 7 razors I own. I think my favorite part about this razor is that its going to make me a better DE shaver on top of giving me an amazing shaving. If you are unsure or scared of this razor DONT BE, treat it with respect and it will reward you!

It's a great one for sure. It has never cut me either, nothing to be afraid of at all. I can't figure out why it always irritates my neck stalk though. Must just be due to the complicated topography for me (sharp jawline, ridiculous huge adam's apple etc.)

I think slants get a bad rap. They're effective, not harsh. Just like a sharp knife being safer than a dull one, I think a slant is a worthy razor for most people.

I think the topic of how the blade should align that's been circulating a lot lately has helped to dispel the bad rep. Maybe with the blade misaligned it really is as savage as was once thought to be.

The Slants are not as ruthless as they're made out to be. With proper technique, they provide the best efficiency:ease of use compared to CC and OC IMHO.

You are right, it will train you to focus on angle and pressure. Tip it back more on the cap and let the blade just lick your face....and say goodbye to irritation.

+1

I started shaving with a 37C this week, and really like it. I was a little bit afraid about being too aggressive, but it was not. One neat thing I like is that the sound the 37C makes is distinctively different than my EJ89 or '67 Aristocrat (Slim).

Jay, I have the same neck problem you do with the slant. I have my neck mapped and wonder if my WTG and XTG are affected by the slant's angle? I can't go ATG with any razor, and stopped attempting it about 6 months ago. Even the R41 is gentler on my neck than the slant.
Still glad that I have it, I just don't use it as much as when I first got it. As always, YMMV!

I just picked up one on BST 20 minutes ago. I have to hold my progress, Fat Boy, Slim, etc at a really odd angle on my neck to get a good clean pass ATG because the hair grows in at a very odd angle. Hoping Mr Slant will solve my wrist yoga dilemma.

I just picked one up after WCS got it back in stock. The razor isn't aggressive at all...in a good way. Super easy shave and 100x better than my 34c after just 2 shaves with it.

Nice to hear. When I first tried the slant I didn't care for it at all and ended up selling it. I tried another one about a year later and had the same results. After selling that one I swore off slants, I thought they just didn't work for me. After a couple years went by I again started looking for something in a DE. I again looked at the slant, but this time I really read into the razor and its use. I ordered another one, took my time and used it the right way. Well the shaves were really great this time around, and now the slant has its place in my DE rotation. I only shave 2 or 3 times a week, but every few shaves I'll use the slant and the shaves are always at least DFS, and sometimes BBS. The slant is one fine DE for sure.

 +1 on all of the above. The only reasons I added a slant to my rotation were the two problematic difficult areas to shave on the right of my lower neck and under my chin. It works effortlessly cutting the stubble at those areas irritation free. It's a very efficient razor indeed. I don't find it harsh and aggressive for my sensitive skin. It's about as effective as a New o/c but it feels smoother and easy on the face.

Last night was my first shave with my 37G, i couldn't believe how smooth the shave was. I got bit a few times and didn't even know it until blood started flowing. There was no audible feedback that I noticed, just sliced through. I think once I use this a few times I might never put it down!

I used my 37C today with a Gillette black on the 3rd shave (used two times previously), and still got a very nice, smooth shave this morning :biggrin1:
