Filter or Unfiltered Pipe??

Hi guys,

Long time Cigar smoker, but have been wanting to get a nice pipe to try something different. I'm looking at a Savinelli Pipe, but it says it requires 6mm filters. Im not sure how these smoke, but should I just shoot for a filterless pipe so as not to worry about running out of filters?? If it makes a difference, I usually go for Ligero or Maduro cigars, so wouldnt a filterless be harsh like that?

Any advice is welcome! Thanks a lot gentleman, and puff on.:thumbup1:

Savinellis come with an adapter so you can smoke them without the filter if you like. I prefer to never use filters. It's just a mess.

Just found the adapters for Savinellis. I guess ill go filterless on this one, since thats the consensus on them. Thanks guys!

Ya, I hated them.
The metal "stinger" filters collect condensation and make for a wet smoke
The larger Adsorba filters are okay for a couple of smokes, but then they start smoking wet and they don't dry out.... so now you're into replacing them and they may or may not be easy to find locally.
The smaller 6mm filters would be a similar situation but aren't going to last as long as the bigger filters.

Savinelli uses the 6mm balsa filters and they're readily available. They last longer and work better than the paper filters, but any filter will get gross pretty quickly depending on what you smoke.

Readily available online, yes.
Locally?
No. I spent a week making detours on the way home stopping at every "smoke shop" between Glendale and Chino and only found one shop that had any CLUE what I was talking about. A couple of them looked at the old filter and said "Oh ya, I guess I should stock those"

It was a few weeks later that I found out about a "real" pipe/cigar shop in the Glendora area, but at that point I'd already binned my $20 specials and bought a Pete.

Duly noted. Id hate to try and track filters down locally and hafta order online. Might as well just keep it filterless.

When I first started smoking a pipe ~15 years ago the gentleman that was helping me with my "starter kit" told me, sure you can smoke with a filter but it's like drinking champagne with a straw it just loses something.

That's a great analogy!

I also have 3 savanelli pipes. Sometimes I use the filters and sometimes I don't. I doesn't really matter what you choose. If I am smoking the same blend in that pipe for a while I keep it in. They are great pipes by the way.

No filters for me. It is just extra hassle. Plus, years ago, I left one in a pipe too long. Talk about a nasty smoke.
