Fedora?

Take a look at the photos below. Was wondering if anyone can speak to the quality of this hat my mother gave me. Should I wear it? Or should I try to keep it in good condition?

I have owned a few Dobb's in the past and consider them a well made fedora. Not like a Borsalino but still good. Wear it for sure!! As a collector of Borsalino's, I long to see more men wearing hats.

Should you wear it!? Of course a hat that is not worn is like the tree that falls down in the forest and nobody hears it fall or perhaps the one handed clap. Along with RAD, and SSAD, I've also been known to have HAD. I have a small rotation of three hats but add to the herd at least a couple times a year. I decided a year or so ago that I was going to bring back the stylish mens hat and I think I've worn a hat daily since. Hats are a blast but they're much cooler to wear than to lock in a closet and admire. Rather like having a really hot wife/girlfriend that you never...you know. Yeah, go ahead and sport that lid my most excellent friend from Minnesota.

More like a stingy brim from the early to mid 50's.

Jim

Now I know why my hat doesn't look as good as yours with the brim down. Because it's so short I tend to wear it with the brim up and the hat sitting back more. Kind of like those jazz and big band guys.

Dobbs makes nice hats. It's not run of the mill like hats you find at Target, or even some of the nicer department stores. I have a couple hats from Nordstrom that are pretty nice, but my Dobbs hat from the 60's is the finest of the lot.

If you don't want it and it's size 59cm, 7 3/8, then send it to me! I'd call it a trilby with the narrow brim but I'm a Brit.

I love hats and have more hats than shaving creams and soaps! My favourites are the Australian Akubras, Fedora style rather than the outback types.

That's a nice hat and deserves to be worn. You can flip the front down easily enough.

Certainly wear it  Nice hat.

I just bought my first fedora yesterday, a black Christie's Knightsbridge. (sorry no pic at this time)

+1

Wear it! I wear hats almost daily and would like to see more men wearing them. Nice hat!

Thanks! I wear a ball cap nearly everyday. But I'd like to move to about 50/50 ball cap and other style of hats. The problem is my wardrobe doesn't lend itself to other style of hats, and I can't really invest in clothes right now.

Fedoras are not made anything like the past glories. The best made hats are from 1920-1965. Dobbs was very popular in the US with good reason as they were available to most Americans and the quality of fur felt was very good. Borsalino produced THE best hats on the planet. The Italian quality of felt was of the highest grade.Thats why the vintage hats are harder to find. I own 7 Borsalinos and am glad I found them years back.
I was born way too late!! I relish those days when men never left home without a hat on. Same goes with the standard of dress by the American male. I hate to be negative, but most men dress like slobs. The "fashion" of today is horrid.
Lounge pants and pajamas along with dirty jeans and sweaters everywhere you go. Yuk. Seems the only time one sees a man dress up a bit is at funerals,to see the judge, wedding days or anniversaries. Not even church goers dress nice anymore with a few exceptions.
So I hope to see the return of the REAL hat,a fedora that adds a touch of class to a man's wardrobe. The above pics of my attire are what I wear daily at my job or wherever I go. I NEVER leave the house without a tie on. Call me eccentric if you will (I will thank you) but at least I look good! LOL :tongue:

Ok. Enough of my clothing rant.

Does the front brim of a fedora flip up in the wind?

I have a modern Tilley fedora, made by an un-named US manufacturer, and the front brim flips up in a moderate to strong wind.

Annoys the heck out of me!

I am wondering if the older fedoras have a stiffer brim?

Cheers!

Depends on the weight of the felt.
I have 4 felt fedoras and not one of them has that problem and 3 of them are new hats. A lighter weight felt hat might suffer from the wind problem.
Now I have a few Panama hats and they are a bit floppy and will deform a bit in the wind.

I love hats! Unfortunatly, I don't own any. I haven't found a particular style that "suits" me. Of course, I haven't really gon hat shopping either. I love fedoras, trilbys, and homburgs. I'd love to have some nice hats to wear with my suits. Yes, I wear suits to work. No, I don't have to (business casual is the standard). Yes, people think I a bit strange. No, I don't care what they think. I shave with a brush, soap, and a DE; I write with fountain pens; I wear suits; I prefer and make MY coffee and tea to what is provided at work for free, I flyfish and tie my own flies too (not a fishing snob though, I just hate sitting around watching a bobber. I'd better stop before I get into a philosophical explination for why I prefer flyfishing).

It has long been a goal of mine to be considered a curmudgeon and an eccentric but always a gentleman.

A typical feature of the "floppy felt" over the last 2 decades. The quality of the felt is indeed the reason and the way the brim is shaped. Add that the rolled edge vs the stitched and banded edge makes a lot of difference. If you are really into fedoras, try The Fedora Lounge and look up the hat section. The experts reside there for sure.

The older fedoras are well worth searching out at antique shoppes, ebay, etc. If you are ever in the Portland,Oregon area, look up Avalon Vintage for a great selection of vintage Borsalinos,DObbs and Stetsons.

Stetson made many varieties of fedoras. They seem to be known as a cowboy hat manufacturer more than a fedora maker. But their models from the years of 1935 to 1955 are sheer greatness!!
