What's new

Feather AS-D1 Let Down :

Received my new Feather AS-D1 in the mail today and shaved with it for the first time tonight. I really didn't think it would be this mild. I ended up going back over a couple of spots with one of my other razors. As of right now I don't think this is going to be a daily user for me. Maybe for those days when I need a really quick once over. It does seem almost impossible to nick yourself with the thing.

Dumb question, but what blade did you use? Did a Feather blade come with it? I'm no expert, but maybe a really sharp blade, since it's so mild

What razor have you gotten good results with?

I'm a Super Speed kind a guy and did not enjoy the best shaves with the AS-D1 right out of the box but after a few shaves have come to preferring it over any razor I've tried.
While it may turn out to not to be your cup of tea I suggest you not brand it after your first shave.

Merkur 38C & Feather Artist Club SS Japanese type. I also have a Dovo Shavette, but I haven't used it since I got the Artist Club. I almost sold my Merkur to another member the other day. I'm glad I changed my mind!

Sounds like you are swimming at the other end of the pool now.

Some people swear by it, but you would not be the first or the last to not be able to get a good shave from it. Myself included.

Without wanting to sound moralizing, but did you tried searching and experimenting for its narrow shaving angle, or you just put it on your face and shaved? I'm starting to realize that many people simply treat all razors the same, or they don't put an initial effort the study the new razor that they have in their hands. My main razor is a copy of your Feather AS-D1, and only after the 3 or 4 week of initiating DE shaving did I get DFS and BBS from it. The blade in my razor makes contact with the skin when I hold it at different angle from all the other razors that I had, and it's the resulting blade angle that gives these razors their effectiveness.

You can count me as one of the guys who tried it and didn't like it. People wrote that it could take quite a while to find the proper shave angle, but I saw no reason to endure a week (or longer) of mediocre shaves just to find the right angle, especially since I already had a few excellent mild razors that required no effort at all to find the right angle.

which razor is a copy of the AS D1?

The iKon OSS (straight bar side)?

OSS SB side may look like the AS-D1, but by most accounts, does not shave like it, being considerably "less mild," so it is not a direct copy.

I loved the look of the AS-D1, but the price and frequent description of it as "too mild", put me off it, so I have never shaved with one.

The OSS, while still on the "mild" side of the "mild to wild" spectrum, is a moderately aggressive razor, which I find "just right". It works for me, with just about any blade.

In other threads, you will find the suggestion that the OSS plate in the Feather AS-D1 makes it a "better" razor, if you like a more aggressive tool.

YMMV!

Feather stainless and Muhle R41 are the most common resold DE razors on BST. This is because these two are the most misunderstood razors out there and are polar opposites as far as extreme blade exposure.

Shaving with the Feather stainless requires an almost zen like concentration to detail. You have to become one with the razor otherwise you will think it is a *** and sell it off. The sweet spot (perfect blade angle) is so narrow that the slightest variation in your hand will remove the blade from contact with your face.

Many do not want to devote the time to mastering the art of shaving this much and if you are one, I would say, go ahead and pass it along to the next victim.... er.... person who thinks they can master that razor

At least three of us here love the AS-D1. It is beautiful, well-made (out of real metal), sturdy, and substantial. I use mine nearly every day and always get safe, comfortable, and close shaves. (I just finished an awesome shave, so I decided to post in defense of the AS-D1).

Some things to try:

1. Listen carefully. The razor's best cutting angle is narrow, but the razor is LOUD. You will easily hear it when the razor is cutting whiskers. (If you need to, turn off the water and the radio so you can hear better.)

2. Try adding a shim or two underneath your Feather blade. This will make the razor noticeably easier to use (with very little loss of safety or comfort).

3. Try using an iKon baseplate with the AS-D1 rather than the razor's stock baseplate. I have the OSS baseplate and love using the open comb side with my AS-D1 cap and handle.

4. Make sure you have prepped well before shaving. I never shave without first taking a nice, hot shower.

By the way, a new Feather razor is in the works and will hopefully be released soon. I'm definitely getting one!

Mr Turtle,

Couldn't agree with you more. The Feather AS-D1 is a superb razor that requires some re-learning of DE shaving. Once you get it, it's shave heaven!!

Use it solidly for 2 weeks and pay attention. You will get the angle and no pressure. Let the 90 grams Stianless do the work.

I'm not going to throw in the towel on it just yet especially considering how much this thing costs. If nothing else it will just be part of my collection. I'll probably end up buying the new too just to have it. Maybe people won't like the new one and the old model will be the more desirable one to have.
