Feather artist club clone?

It’s been a few years since I was into shaving with straight razors. What’s the current status of feather artist club clones? Is there any one in particular that people are going with? I am an Amazon prime member. Are there any to be had there or are people getting them off aliexpress?

I am not a big fan of companies that are stealing designs.
In the EU you can get a big fine for buying fake goods.
You can get these at affordable prices second hand.
Is it worth risking getting a 10000 euro fine to save a few bucks?

I hear people gripe about one pocket knife company stealing another company’s designs (such as ganzo’s close copy of spyderco etc) and all I can do is LOL. Since when have knife companies not used one another’s designs? Even in the beginning all the companies had barlow, congress, and stockman pattern knives etc that were nearly identical. I guess I feel the same way about razor companies too. It’s just the way it’s always been.

If you become a member at a watch forum and ask where can I get a Rolex clone, what response do you think you are going to get?

I guess it depends on what is meant by 'clone'. There is a big difference between a fake - a copy passing itself off as the original, and one which is simply another version of a design which does not breach any copyright laws and which has its own branding. I have a low opinion of the latter, although I believe they are not illegal to own, and an even lower opinion of the former, the legality of ownership probably depending on where you reside. There are many threads on B&B about Feather 'clones', here is an example:

You guys realize that patents only run for 20 years in Japan, like the US, and even so it's not clear which parts of the AC razor would even be patentable, probably the blade release mechanism if anything--replaceable blade barber razors have been a thing for a long, long time. Selling a razor that takes AC blades, even one that looks like a Feather, is not illegal or unethical as long as it's not deceptive (a Feether DDX or something like that)

At any rate, I'm sure Jatai is more than capable of defending their IP.

4450.00

Well Clone & Copy is IMHO making a Duplicate down to every detail, and calling it the DS, AliEx, or Yaki something.

Counterfeit IMHO is a total Copy including placing the Original Name on Product, to trick consumers into thinking they are getting REAL DEAL at huge discount.

Recall years ago going to Firearms Show, and Sale and one vendor had Micro-Tech OTF Auto Knives at $100.00 bucks, as I looked and looked they look like real deal Micro-Tech's, that go for between $350-$450.00.

Walked over to another dealer to check out the real deals, and reurned to dealer selling FAFE COUNTER-FITS. The Release Button was MIM, Not Machines, the Serial Number was in Wrong Place, and every counterfeit had same Serial Number.

Said something to the salesmen about his apparent counterfeits, he couldn’t care less, and I am sure sold many that weekend. Buyer beware, of too good a deals. Show promoter did not care, he made money off booth/table rental.

It will be a fake only if it says "Feather" on it and it is not.
Some of these clones are actually almost identical.
The header of the thread even specifically mentioned Feather as a brand name.

If the Blackland Blackbird had been cloned, and someone posted a thread asking where to get a Blackbird clone, would that be OK. Shane is a paying vendor on this platform.
Tatara is also a paying vendor. What about recommendations on Tatara clones?
Where do you draw the line?
There are also some ethical boundaries, in my opinion.

Let me be clear to avoid the confusion. I’m not talking about a counterfeit where they falsely brand it as a feather. I’m talking about as close a copy as possible with its own brand.

I agree, ethical and legal boundaries don't always coincide. If someone was to ask they are looking for Feather AC functionality and someone replied Kai Captain, will that be a more acceptable answer? Or is this objection is only there if the request was for less expensive alternative.

Kai Captain has their own unique designs, and is a competing company.
I would feel the same if someone asked for a fake Kai Captain.

You can get Case, Buck, Boker, Schrade, etc knives nearly identical patterns (stockman, Barlow, congress, whittler, etc). How many straight razor brands razors were close to identical? Why are we getting our under pants all in a bunch because other brands are making nearly identical copies of feather razors? 🤯 Competition is great for consumers. I think feathers are overpriced for what they are and if there are alternatives that are like 80% as good for 20% the price why wouldn’t people want to avail themselves of that? I can also understand the flip side where people want to get the original or the most premium option.

I found several likely candidates on aliexpress. I was hoping to find something similar on Amazon but no luck. Actually there are so many on aliexpress that the difficulty becomes picking one.

This is a Feather AC-DX you won't find anyone making a clone of, I contacted my good friend in Japan, we had been talking for some time about him hand engraving a Feather AC-DX for me, I told him I wanted traditional Japanese symbols and designs he came back with a few good designs and we finally agreed on a Japanese Oni mask with waves and wind-bars and Cherry blossoms, the razor is hand engraved on both sides.

FYI, Kai and Feather are the same company and always have been. Kai Captain and Feather Artist Club are just two of Kai’s product lines. So they aren’t actually competing businesses, and they were the originator of this razor blade format and the blade holders that use them.

Absolutely stunning. Do you use it or it is more like working art? Lot of Ron Lake scrimshaw folders are like that.
