What's new

Favorite inks

Hello gents,
I'm writing to ask a few questions. Though I've been writing with a fountain pen for a couple years I'm fairly new to inks. I've always used cheap staples pen ink. So I'm led to two questions. First of all, what is your favorite ink? Secondly what's your favorite blue ink? I'm hoping to pick up a couple different inks, one blue and one to be decided for the two pens I use regularly. So gents, let em fly and tell me what ink I should start slinging.

P.S. the majority of my writing consists of notes in class or alteration tags for suits.

Some of favorites are Noodlers Air Corp blue/black (with a bit of green), Noodlers Australian Roses, Diamine Red Dragon. I'm still searching for the perfect blue (dark blue, navy blue).

Right now it's Waterman Florida (Serenity) Blue and Noodlers Bad Belted KingFisher which is supposed to be a blue black but for me it looks blue-green when it dries.

My favorite is Namiki Blue. It's a nice shade, although I think it looks its best from a fairly wet writer. Not the very cheapest, but reasonably priced. Hasn't caused any problems in any pen that I've tried it in and it's water-resistant. It's pretty much become my "standard" ink.

My two current favorite blues are Noodler's Ottoman Azure and Noodler's Bad Belted Kingfisher. Ottoman Azure has some real nice shading when used with a flexible or broad nibbed pen and the BBK is mostly bulletproof and useful for applications when you need permanency. I've got one pen inked up with Waterman Serenity Blue, but to my eye, it's just a generic, nothing-special blue.

Oops...just noticed that I have the two Noodler's links reversed.

+ 1 on Noodler's BBK. Also Aurora Blue, and PR Naples Blue. Then there's Noodler's Bay State Blue. Read up on it before buying; mixed opinions on it.

I'd suggest you try out some samples of ink rather than whole bottles ... that way you can find the perfect blue for you, out of all the suggestions that are coming. And the perfect "other".

It's not really a blue, but it's close enough that you may want it for that purpose ... or for your "other" ... consider Noodler's Kung Te-cheng. One of my all-time favourites.
Noodler's blue (I am a big fan of Noodler's BTW) is a very good blue.

For an "other" ink ... Noodler's black is very good, and their North African Violet performs very well if you like that sort of colour.

I would also suggest getting a sample of an Iroshizuku ink in whatever colours tickle your fancy, as they can perform very well.

... of course, you could do a lot worse than getting a bottle of each of the two B&B Inks ... one a black tinged with green, and the other a steely slate blue ... at Westcoastshaving ... sorry, no samples though.

My favorite blue is Pilot Iroshizuku - Tsuki-yo (Moonlight). It is a nice blue/gray color and has great flow. I'm pretty new to the whole fountain pen thing though.

I really want to find a black/green, and Noodler's Dr Zhivago didn't really have the green I was looking for. Might give 5'oclock a shot after I get through it.

Cheers!
