fatboy doors loosen durring shave

I have a fat boy, and really like the shave it gives. It seems to function much like my slim as far as the twist to close mechanism. The only issue is that it seems to loosen up during the shave. I can do about a 1/4 of my face and go to rinse it, and when I go back to the face it seems to loosen up and I have to tighten it down. It has the feeling of compressing the spring like the slim, but perhaps a bit less resistance. Is it the spring just not strong enough or something else? It is otherwise in good shape, and I like the size of it in my hand.

Assuming you have a user grade picked up recently, have you treated it to a hot water and soap soak? There could be crud in it preventing the "full" 1/4 turn.

+1 on the hot soak . . . if the spring is not compressing enough it will loosen up and bite you.

Another possibility is a broken spring - again, not enough tension to prevent problems. If a long and patient soak doesn't fix it, remove the retainer cap and pull the spring. It doesn't require full disassembly.

Have you made sure that when you close the silo doors you have twisted the knob an additional 1/4 turn to lock in place?

if you'll pardon my thread hijacking: I have a question about this last 1/4 turn: The silo doors on my fatboy close all the way (with no gap between them), but then
when I turn the bottom knob this last 1/4, the silo doors "creep open" a little bit --maybe 2mm. Anything to worry about there, or is that normal?

[This didn't seem worth starting another thread to ask] [hope that's ok OP. Ok, back to brass tacks . . .

So I tried it again today, and it still seems to creep open a bit, but not as bad. Not sure if I jammed it tighter, or if it was a different blade, perhaps my spring it giving out, and stiffer blades just force it open? It is very clean as the previous owner gave it a good soak in a ultrasonic cleaner, and i hit it with scrubbing bubbles. The action is very smooth, and there is much less pressure when going that last 1/4 turn that there is in my slim.

Persona Blue (Lab Prep) sees little creep
NOS Swedish Gillette sees lots of creep.

I've seen them clean as new outside, but gunked on the inside. Soak it, work it, soak it some more. See if you get more action from the spring. It could also be broken, which of course won't be fixed by soaking!

If your razor is the earlier design with the threaded retainer cap, you can simply unthread the cap and inspect the spring. The crimped retainer is a little more work, but can still be removed and reused.
