Fake razor?

I walked by a hardware store on the way home from work today and asked the owner if he had any straights. He showed me a hollow ground razor with Solingen stamped clearly on the shank with white plastic scales and no further markings on the blade itself. That was the build-up, now for the let down: 38 €. The guy was badgering me to buy it and I fled before being able to ask why it was so cheap or take pictures. I said I would think about it. It may be that he has had it for ages and just wants to get rid of it but I also considered the possibility that it might be a fake. If not I think I might buy it because for that price it would be stupid not to take it since ugly scales can be replaced.

So that is my question: is there such a thing as a fake solingen razor?

There are pakistani razors with no marks sold in "Solingen" scales, yes. But if there is actually Solingen ground into the metal, it'd be a first for me to see that in a fake.

Thank you, I think I will go and buy it. Luckily I can afford to make a loss of 38 € if it turns out to be a bad razor in some way.

Have a close look against the light if there are any big chips (which I doubt), lay the blade flat on the counter (if it's glass counter it's even better) to be sure it's not twisted and finally, look closely for any cracks on the blade (if you see some, run again)!

There are some generic Solingen razors out there but if it has no other markings on it I would pass. For that much you can buy a quality vintage blade where you will have no doubts.

Fake Solingen razors sold in Germany? This is not good. :thumbdown The only brick and mortar store (Zwilling) I came by carried real Henckels straight razors. It was a blast to see them.

+1

I agree. There are quality razors out there that have very few markings but one Solingen stamp is too few. I'm not saying that the razor is fake but you can get a quality razor from a recommended brand for that price and avoid any doubt.

i apologise if this necro is against the rules or something, i can start another thread...I just bought this: https://www.amazon.com/Dovo-Straight-Razor-Carbon-Handle/dp/B000Q85OHK

Price=US$111. I would def. not call it shave ready, it's not the worst BY FAR, but it could do with a GOOD long stropping session at the least. My concern: I've literally not seen that blade DOV4580 ANYWHERE for less than $160...why so cheap? Is it fake? It came in a sealed box, with well done but small paper warning inside - both a good sign. It also has all the markings on the blade, same as the picture. And the steel itself, while not perfect, is at the same level as the many original and new Victorinox's i've bought.

Oh also, I just realised this, it DOES in fact "bleed" a bit, the handle does anyway...
