I'm about to get my first hone. Has anyone out there ever tried or even heard of the Eze-Lap Double-Sided (Diamond) Sharpener? How was it? And don't you just hate the name???
I bought one years ago to sharpen knives. It was what my local hardware store had in stock. Since then I have restored and set bevels on maybe 50 eBay razors and flattened a half a dozen hones with good results. It's worn out now as you might expect, but it was cheap and did a really good job. Now I have a Cretan hone for bevel work. But I'll probably buy another one just for back up. Don't know if there are better diamond plates for the same price but I don't have to pay shipping to buy locally.
These are fine for pre-bevelsetting edge repair. They will make quick work of grinding out chips and dings, or frowns or unwanted smiles.
Despite the name, these are not necessarily as flat as one would like for honing razors. You will still want a 1k stone lapped flat, or a proper lapping plate with film or sandpaper, for actual bevel setting. But an inexpensive diamond hone or two are well worth the money when you need to remove a lot of steel. They also work great for pocketknives.
