Do you believe that Colognes go 'off' after a period of time ? Will sunlight on the bottle effect the smell ? If you take a Cologne on a plane in the hold will the temperature also have its effect ???

Colognes can go off after a while though I've yet to experience it. I believe the rate at which they devolve is related to what they are made of. Apparently, they'll turn brown(er) and develop an smell similar to acetone. If what I have read is correct, that smell dissipates after you've worn it for a while.

Also, the inside surface of a glass container may not be as stable as you would assume.

If you read under "motivation" you'll get an idea of what they do to liquor bottles to keep them stable. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dealkalization

Bottom line is use your cologne up! The other stuff you keep to sell to people who dont' know all this.

(Bottom line is treat it like wine, if you are comfortable, it is probably comfortable. As far as airplanes, what can you do? Nothing really, so don't worry about it.)

And from what I have read on Basenotes, heat and light (as in sunlight, at least) will cause deterioration in fragrances. The most careful apparently store theirs in fridges or closets.

I have had vintage *** that seemed to have lost some of their potency, but did not look yellowed. I had a spray bottle of Gucci Rush, with ust a little bit left in it, that seemed to have pretty much lost all scent, and one that was quite full that seems to remain at full strength. I assume that a good bit of age on most scents is they are in fairly full bottle is not going to have much effect barring a lot of light exposure. But a whole lot of light, heat, or oxygen exposure and/or a significant amount of time is going to start to break down many scents. I have had some scents for a long time and it really has not been a problem.
