Ever tried this!!

So I recently watched a demo on "Method Shaving" by Charles and I must say it looks crazy scary. I would never try that at least not at that insane speed, but it was interesting and at the same time kinda felt like I had butterflies in my stomach. Kept thinking he was gonna peel his face right off.

Here's link if you haven't seen it b4

Anyway the point is he mentioned the reason he didn't even cut himself was because his face was totally moisturized making his face like a marshmellow. It got me thinking, most of the prep I do is to condition the hair to be shaved and I don't really do anything to condition my face for the shave. I've been using uberlather over the last month and what if instead of adding the glycerin to the lather I just added it to my face prior to shaving but after my shower while my face is still wet since glycerin is sticky if applied dry.

Well I just tried it and my face feels great BBS with no irritation with 3 passes (WTG, XTG, ATG). I'm wondering if anyone else has tried this and is there any negative effects of putting glycerine directly on the face. Also I guess I should mention that I used a superlather and I applied the glycerine a second time after the first pass and rinse.

Mods if I posted in the wrong place my apologies.

Honestly it just sounds like too much hassle to me. If I can get a BBS shave every time doing a 3 pass shave in around 10 minutes, why add in extra steps or ingredients?

+1 :thumbup1:

I understand some of the philosophy behind the 'method', but I agree more with this statement. Sometimes less is more.

Although, until viewing this forum I never used PSO before or Skin Food after any shaves, and found that while I could do without, it does make shaving more enjoyable.

I guess I should've mentioned getting BBS shaves with no irritation doesn't happen every time for me and I think that's the point of Charles's "Method Shaving" system getting BBS everytime with no irritation.

I'm just trying to be a master like you so forgive me if "it just sounds like too much hassle" as I assure you I very much enjoy the 30 to 45 min. I get to relax and enjoy my shaves. Thanks for your input kind Sir.

No offense intended my friend. It takes time and a lot of experimenting to know what works best for you. I started with a DE, switched to straights for a while, then to SE for a while, now back to DE because that is what works best for me.

If method shaving works wonders for you, I say go for it. We all have our quirks. Just find what works best and go for it. A little more speed and skill will come with time.

Well, after reading your post this morning I decided to try it out. It really is amazing.

It didn't add any time to my prep really. I just put a couple of drops of glycerin on my fingertips, and rubbed it into my skin. I then made my super lather with Tabac, and KMF cream. Once lathered I stropped my razor and proceeded to shave. It was very smooth. I don't generally get irritation, so that wasn't a factor, but it seems like the razor glides better.

One thing to note is that this was a freshly honed razor, and for me I don't usually get the smoothest shaves until the third shave or so after I hone. I figure that the use and stopping smoothes my edge a bit; but, to get this smooth a shave with a freshly honed blade is phenomenal.

I haven't tried what your suggesting.

I wonder if it would work if pso (olive oil) were applied to the face and glycerine was used in the lather?

You can put glycerine on your face anytime as a moisturizer. Most people say to dilute it 1:1 with water. If your face is already wet and you apply some to your fingers and put it on, I don't see the problem.

Whatever works for you. If I end up taking much more than 15 minutes for a shave, I start feeling irritable. When I was first getting into the whole wetshaving/DE thing, I found my shaves taking a good half-hour or more. My lather would dry out, my legs and feet would get tired, and I'd be bored. I realized that instead of feeling relaxed, I felt worn out, all just so I could do something that, ultimately, I intend as something to get me ready to face my day, not be my day.

True enough. My legs start to feel tired if I'm standing in front of the mirror for more than 15 minutes. I'm glad those days are well past.

glycerine slows the evaporation of water.

PSO applied and glycerine mixed in with lather works pretty good.

Another method shaving thread in the general forum.....:thumbdown

I don't believe in his terms. I don't believe that he was using a razor in his blade. I don't believe that you should have to buy everything of his to get a great shave. I don't believe that you have to come across as a complete *** to get your point across.

but, I also know that he has developed a system that really works and I don't and can't bash that.

Actually, it's not. The OP starts out talking about RMWS, but he's actually asking about the practice of applying glycerine to the face prior to shaving, irrespective of the overall shaving method practiced.

I'm not arguing with you but the video in the link is about the entire method shaving system not just the glycerin.

Good point. When I first started reading the thread, I thought it was about the Method and felt similarly to the way you do. His main point is embedded fairly well down in the Method talk.

I use Glycerin to soften beard and moisturize face...then I lather (I actually add some Glycerin to the mug and mix in the creme and create lather). Once I lather, I wait and strop my str8 and relather (with warm/hot water...it feels amazing. At least to me...it seems like a hassle, but it's worth it because you take care of beard and face in one shot. If you are strapped for time, this may not work...

PS: I actually go through a more elaborate scenario to prep my face (I do enjoy this phase of the shave...probably more than the shave itself :thumbup1:)...you can find what I do here (under Bladerunner 001):

Thanks for the help. I read through your link, interesting adding baking soda. I've been putting glycerin and then Pacific SO on top. Then I strop and let the mix soak in. Then lather and shave works awesome. I will try the baking soda step and report how it goes.

What you can do is wash your face with warm/hot water (after shower) and then rub the baking soda/Glyerin slurry on your face and let sit, during which time you make your lather in mug (with few drops of Glycerin added in mug). Once the slurry is washed off with warm/hot (after ~3-5 minutes) water, rub straight Glycerin on warm face and lather on top. you know the rest of routine ...leads to an amazing moisture.

I'd be curious on your progress...this has worked great with my DE shaves in the past and I am keeping the same practice of face/beard prep with my str8 shaves...I gotta get used to the new blade technique though :001_cool:

Good luck,
-Robert
