Ever-Ready 100 restoration question

Trying my first restoration. Picked up a red over cream Ever-Ready 100 at antique store and making an attempt to put a new knot in it. I believe i have most of the old knot removed. The "shelf" appears to be a cream color and the knot black and I have most of black removed. The diameter is right at 21mm. My question is the depth is only about 5mm, doesnt sound deep enough from what i have read. I am afraid if i go much deeper I will destroy the shelf (guessing 3-4mm of shelf left) I like a knot with some back bone and not to floppy so i am thinking i will need to set it deeper. Any advice is appreciated.

You can always drill through the old shelf and then build a new one. I filled the handle with epoxy although on my cream/red Everready it really heated up the handle. The handle did not melt, but it did get hot. This was only a concern with the plastic handled-brushes. You can also take some cork or other item and fill the handle with it to the level you want and then set the knot. I liked to use a coin with this method to give a little extra wait and help make a flat surface for the knot. I'm sure there are other, and probably better, ideas in the brush restoration thread.

I always remove the existing shelf and construct my own. This gives me the freedom to set the knot at the height I want and to weigh the handle as I like. My last restore, I filled the hollow handle with hot melt glue. It's quick to fill and harden, cheap and dense enough so I didn't have to use additional weight.
