Esterbrook Cap Jewel

Have any of you seen an Esterbrook J cap jewel like this one?

This photo is from an eBay auction that ended recently.
Is this a franken-cap-jewel, or did Esterbrook actually produce such a thing?

And yes, I bought it. :blushing: Out of curiosity, mostly.

I'm thinking Franken-cap-jewel, but I'm not the ultimate authority on Esterbrook. I have several, but they're all the conventional variety. Let us know when you receive it...maybe an in-person examination will reveal more information.

I've never seen anything like that before. Someone probably stuck that on there to replace a commonly broken jewel.

The pen arrived today.
I was planning on taking the jewel off and replacing it with a proper one, but seeing it in person, I really kinda like it. Whoever put it on, did a really nice job of it.

It cleaned up very nicely. I managed to get the section out, and the sac looks almost new. Though I still plan on replacing it before I carry it to work.

It came with a 2556 nib that's pretty well boogered, so I put in the only other nib I had, a 1555. The nib's not bad when you have just the right angle. When you don't, it's VERY scratchy.

With the better picture I think I would leave it as is!!! You are using it as an carry pen and not a collector.

Agreed. My initial intention of 'fixing' it was based on the eBay photos, where it looked to be an aluminum ring topped with a plastic jewel. But the whole thing appears to be made of the same metal as the clip. The jewel is perfectly centered and has roughly the same wear as the rest of the pen, so it looks as though it belongs there. My pictures don't do the pen justice.

Now I need to find a better nib for it.
