What's new

ER 500PB pre-restore

I hadn't thought about this in a while. I had a few brushes show up in razor lot. I had intended to do this at some point and some recent pictures popped it back in my head. I haven't torn it apart yet and am just shopping around/daydreaming about the knot to put in. Suggestions?

I like the TGN Silvertip Grade A or Super Badger knots, but the two-band Finest is pretty nice too. That knot looks pretty small (18mm?). If it were me, I would open it up to accept at least a 22mm knot.

That's a great looking handle that will really shine when it's cleaned up and re-knotted. You might also want to consider sanding down the mold lines for a cleaner appearance.

Nice handle! Any TGN silvertip or even the best is great. I notice the silvertip sucks up more soap than the best does but it is a bit softer on my face.

Since the handle is just a bit taller and narrow I was thinking of doing this first one for my wife. She'll be forgiving of mistakes. I suppose a larger knot would make her job easier, do I also want a high loft?

do I also want a high loft?

Depends on the hair. 50mm (about 2") works well with Finest, but can be a bit soft (read: floppy) for Grade A or Super Badger. But, being for the wife's legs, I would think a higher loft (50mm-55mm) and more splay might be preferential. I think most women like things that are soft on their skin, so Grade A or Super Badger might be the way to go.

Thanks!. It definitely looks small so I'll get it cleaned out as is first before I decide to enlarge it.

I'm looking at the 20-22mm super from TGN which is nice since I get the choice of Fan or Bulb. Leaning toward fan for this use.

I have a brush I built with that same general handle, and a TGN finest knot. I put a 20mm knot in it, and it is a decent all around brush. I also have a 22mm fan knot in a different handle, and it is nice, too. If I was building that particular brush, I'd probably put a WD silvertip, or a TGN silvertip in it. If you are doing it for your wife and want soft tips and are using cream more than soap, I'd set a silvertip of some sort in there.

I absolutely love the handle shape. If I could replace all of my bowl brushes with that style of handle, I'd be happy. It just seems to fit my hand well, especially for bowl lathering. It keeps my fingers up out of the lather.

I have to tell you I never measure. i go down to where the original knot was and if it sits right thats fine if not I take it down by eye to where I want it to sit

More pics. Ground it out with a combination of things. Punched through the shelf mostly being careless but will probably fill it anyway. Hole is currently 19mm and about 12mm deep.

Here's a bit on the tools an technique I used so far.

I started with my cordless drill but found my cordless dremel at a higher speed was far more effective. Watch out when things start to smell like burning.

I had the ball end cutter described in other threads. I have also seen these for a dremel in a cylinder, not sure if that would be helpful or not. I initially cut the bristles with a wire cutter I have and drilled in the center. Then laying the dremel on its side in my left hand, I put my brush on its side in my right. I rolled the brush to work around the outside edge, and with my left could pivot the dremel left and right to move the bit either closer to the center or closer to the edge. Like a sideways record player. Maybe these pictures will help. Oh yeah, don't forget to cover the top to prevent damage.

OK, so I filled her in on what I was working on and that I was going to be giving it to her for the shower. I was thinking of best or silvertip but her response was "make sure its scratchy and firm." So now I don't know. She is pretty rough on her stuff. Perhaps the TGN 20mm Pure? I'm not sure I like the idea of the nylon, not really knowing what to compare it to most directly. WhippedDog is out right now. I could possibly step her into a boar which she might like too. Sounds like she wants to do some serious exfoliation with this so I want it to hold up.

Now with this new info, opinions from people who have gotten these knots before?

Scratchy and firm is not a silvertip. I think the nylons tend to be softer as well. Pure might be the ticket.

I still think Finest is the way to go. Firm with a bit of scritch, but the tips will soften with use.
