Eclipse Red Ring showed up with a crack-opinions?

I bought an Eclipse Red Ring off eBay UK. Paid $166.5USD plus $15.5 shipping. The description stated "Excellent condition," and the pics, though distant, indicated a nice razor. I bid at top dollar, accordingly.

It arrived today and first impressions were nice. Case was good, razor was clean all over. On closer, inspection, though, I saw this:

This kind of ruins it for me, and I'm probably going to ship it back and request a refund, but IF I were decide to keep it, how much would you think is appropriate to request in partial refund?

Sigh.

I think a $40 refund would be reasonable. You got a very good deal on it as it is, but contact the seller and see what he says.

It's hard to figure how much should be the partial refund. These razors in good condition usually cost around 270$ and more if they are in excellent + condition. If the seller had mentionned the crack, I'm sure it would have sell for the same price BUT since he said 'Excellent' I guess you can claim him something between 25-40$ top. (These crack are fixable, any good jeweler can fix that) My biggest concern is, how does it shave ?

If you really want a nice one, no reason to take one with a cracked handle, even if they discount it. I would send it back.
Are cracked handles common on Red Rings?

I'm SO glad my rad for these razors came to an end. Much to agressive of a razor for me. Good luck with yours OP and hope you get it straightend out.

You got a good price as is considering you got the case as well, but if you don't want a crack I would just send it back for a refund.

If this ^^^ is the link to the original auction, I think that you could ask for a partial refund equaling roughly the amount a jeweler may charge to fix the crack in the handle. The selling price of this razor compared to the price of other Eclipse razors is irrelevant in this case, IMHO. The OP was the highest bidder for this specific razor, the fact that other similar razors go for a higher price does not affect the value of the razor in question.

The reason why I believe the the seller must take responsibility for the discrepancy between what the item was sold as and the condition the item was actually in is because the seller appears to have intentionally taken pictures that hide the crack. It's one thing if a seller simply doesn't notice a problem with the razor and fully believes it to be in as good condition as described, but in this case it looks like the seller described the razor as excellent and then went out of his/her way to hide the crack in the pictures.

Notice how in each of these pictures the the seller chooses to take the picture from an angle at which the crack is out of view (I can't believe this is just coincidence, the seller was intentionally dishonest).

Just looked through the bidding on this:

I'm a little suspicious of the seller. 1***h is a brand new member (joined within the last 30 days) and it seems he kept bumping the price up. This is the only item the seller has sold since 2011, and a brand new eBay member shows up and starts bidding the price up on an Eclipse Red Ring? The seller also has a negative feedback on the last item they sold saying they were "sneaky." Could be nothing, but just throwing it out there.

I had a few Red Rings and they dont come around too often. I dont think it is a bad price for a cased one. The crack is away from the adjuster area at the bottom it should not effect the shave. If you are a collector or a user it is a bargain. I would ask for 30 dollars partial refund since it does have the case. If the seller dont comply leave a negative feedback and keep it. You can resell it at higher price. [ just dont forget to disclose the crack if u do resell ]

I had one that had a small crack, it was mint in a case. I sold it for 520.00 and eBay seller was happy. I guess some of these have cracks but the scarcity of the razor makes it still desirable.

Great catch. I can't believe I missed that. Definitely something stinky there.

As far as a jeweler repair goes, what do they do exactly? Fill it with solder/lead? Is a repair discernible? Would you expect it to increase the value of the razor compared to the same razor with an unrepaired crack, though not to the level as if were altogether uncracked?

Simply return for refund, seller did not disclose the flaw. One shave though! :001_tongu

Why should you have to waste your time seeking out a jeweler? I have bought a couple things from this forum (thanks again) and a good number on e-bay. If you pay top dollar for an item you should a top dollar item. If the item is not as described or has a defect, back it goes. There never is a defect with my payment.

Also looks like shill bidding (circumstantially), but even if it were, the price was a fair one for an uncracked razor (but you got a cracked one).

As it is, you have to waste your time shipping it back to the seller; just bad all the way around.

Right now there is a cased Eclipse on ebay which the seller has described as having a crack in barrell; you could use the selling price for that item as a reference point (but why bother).

Wow that sucks, But at least you didn't really over pay. If you send it back you maybe out of Shipping Cost ? Unless you put in a dispute with Ebay, I did that one time and got my Shipping Fees back . Good Luck with that my friend.
