Douro/English fern replacements

Title pretty much says it. Any dead ringers for Penhaligon’s Douro or English Fern?

While not the same, GFT Wild Fern is quite similar to Penhaligon’s English Fern. It‘s less powdery and a bit sharper to my nose.

I cannot think of anything to replace Penhaligon’s Douro.

you still can find strays on auction sites from time to time.
for me, i'm ok for a while; two of my favs...

Douro has not been discontinued. It’s listed on Penhaligon’s UK website. It’s probably just out of stock in the USA. When that happens, they suspend the listing of a fragrance and then restore it when it comes back in stock.

I had contacted Pens directly about a year ago and their response was to the effect of don’t expect them to be produced again. I do see Douro on the UK website, but it has not reappeared in the US, unfortunately. Lack of forethought has lead to a friend who resides in England being Stateside currently; I could have arranged for him to bring a couple bottles with him.

You could probably purchase them and then have them shipped to a UK service, which would in turn send them to you. I’ve never used one of those services before, but others will undoubtedly be able to offer advice when it comes to that. Or you could have them shipped to your friend‘s UK address and then worry about getting them at a later time.

If I were you, I would act before it disappears entirely.

If you’re looking for fragrances that are dead ringers for Penhaligon’s Douro or English Fern. For Douro, which is a classic fougère with a rich, aromatic profile, you might want to check out “Monsieur de Givenchy” by Givenchy. It has a similar blend of citrus and herbal notes that capture that old-school gentleman vibe.As for English Fern, which is another fougère but with a greener, more straightforward herbal profile, “Fougere Royale” by Houbigant could be worth exploring. It's a bit pricier but carries that same timeless, ferny quality.Neither might be exact copies, but they should give you a similar feel.

I would say no dead ringers.

English Fern is more or less the epitome of a fougere. There are a lot of fougeres around. Azzaro pour Homme woiuld be a good one. GFT Wild Fern may be the closest, but it seems quite a bit different to me. Fougere Royale by Houbigant going way back, if I recall, was closer to English Fern than it is now. To my nose English Fern smells the most purely fern-like of any fougere.

Douro is one of my favorite scents. To me it is a highly aromatic barbershop scent. I think there are many barbershop scents sort of in the same neighborhood, but nothing as good as Douro. Racquets was a great barbershopy scent, with fewer aromatics than Douro.

English Fern and Douro are/were treasures. To my mind, Penhaligon's has lost its way.
