Done with Merkur

Hi ,

Just wanted to vent my frustration so apologies for any ranting, have today taken apart a Merkur Futur for cleaning that I was going to PIF to a friend as I no longer use it since receiving a Slim adjustable, have had this razor around 3 months (i think) and the plating is already going , this is not the first issue I have had with a Merkur, I had a Progress that I returned as the blade gap was uneven, when I returned it I was told that this was within Merkur tolerances That is it for me , im done, Merkur really need to up their game

The Slim is a great razor. Save the Merk for traveling so if you leave it behind somewhere, you won't be nearly as heartbroken as you would have leaving a Slim behind. Another member took a Fatboy with him on a trip and had forgotten it in the hotel room upon departure. He never saw it again.

Bummer, that type of thing definitely shouldn't happen, especially at their price point.

It is too bad Merkur doesn't use brass enough, they have some very nice razor designs being wasted on low quality metals.

That's exactly why I travel with my 180... while I m happy with it wrt the build and finish, there is nothing special in how it shaves, so it makes a safe travel razor. In fact I am on a trip with it this weekend.

Merkur's tolerance levels seem to be massive of late! It seems they will let anything out the door!

If you get hardware that is correctly plated then it is a very good product, but that seems to be a 50/50 proposition now a days.

Merkur's QC has been in question for a long time now.
No one should have to say they are lucky to get a razor that works.

I have 2 38HD C's. One is perfect and the other has a bur on the threads. It will screw together, but it is rough. Time will tell if this will be a problem.

I can't believe the prices they charge for razors that have such low QC. I would love an all brass slant of the Merkur design, or even if it was plated comparatively to the Muhle/Jagger products. Heck, I really want a Progress too, but it just isn't gonna happen with where they are at right now.

Relax... all three Merkurs that I have owned were without any defects and shaved fine. I am sure you will be happy with yours.

About three years ago, there were rumors flying around B&B that Merkur was in the process of re-tooling their factories to deal with the QC issues. They were not introducing new models, just replacing the worn-out equipment that produced their current line-up, in order to address complaints similar to the OP.

Does anybody remember hearing about this? Does anybody know if it actually came to happen?

Yeah QC at Merkur is slipping as of late.
Really hope they get their act together since they have some fine razors by design.

the only one i have left is a r41 and i have sent back a few others. it also took 3 r41's to get a good one (which i ended up having to sell)

R41 is not Merkur. It is Mühle.

Quality problems on the Merkur DE razors comes as no surprise to many owners of Dovo straight razors.

My Mergress, Vision and Futur razors are high up on my list of favorites. My problem is that, after about a year, the adjustor on my Vision isn't working properly. I emailed the manufacturer and received no reply. I also took it apart, cleaned it and re-assembled it, but it didn't help.

At these prices, buying a razor shouldn't be a crapshoot.

Threads like these make me glad I stick with vintage Gillettes. No worries about pot metal with them. Plus, what can you say about a plating job that lasts for 50+ years?

I've owned several Merkurs in the past. Some were better than others. I've had good results when dealing with Merkur's customer service. Others have not. Having said that, I'll also be sticking with vintage Gillettes. They are far better made than any of the modern Merkurs, and for the most part they cost less too.
