What's new

Does anybody know anything about a Baxter of California razor?

I found one of these as I was perusing the net for a new razor. I couldn't find anything about it in the reviews, so I figured here was the place to ask.

It's a re-branded Muhle R89 razor. Exact same razor as the Muhle R89, just has Baxter stamped in the bottom of the handle, where it would usually say "Muhle".

The Muhle R89 is a wonderful razor, and uses the exact same head as the Edwin Jagger DE89L.

A month, or so ago, my recommendation would have been to simply get the Muhle R89, as it was $20 cheaper, but the cost of the Muhle has recently went up, so it now costs roughly the same as the Baxter.

+1

What John said.

I was just thinking how 50 years from now, collectors will be looking for both razors.. one marked Muhle and one marked Baxter of California so that they have both to round out the collection. Kind of like how people presently look for all of the Merkur/Hoffritz/Coles/Pomco vintage slant razors just to have all of the ones made by Merkur.

The Baxter of California branded R89 is $60 plus shipping. The Muhle branded R89 is $45 shipped - $15 cheaper.

I was basing my post on the fact that the Muhle R89 costs $61 at West Coast Shaving, when a few months back it only cost around $40. I was thinking the cost from the factory must have gone up, and was thus assuming that other sellers would follow suit on a cost increase when new stock came in. :tongue_sm
