What's new

Does anybody else clean the INSIDE of the tube?

I've never thought previously to get a 'Q-Tip' as I thinkthey are called in the US and clean the inside of the tube on an Old Type before.

Of course I do the normal soak, scrub, aluminium foil and baking soda, ultra-sonic, Barbicide, 'polish' thing as appropriate but have never thought to get up inside the bottom tube on a Single Ring or the barrel of the handle inside before.

DUH, I know but having done so I can only WOW. The crud up there is just amazing, even after my normal cleaning routine. I'm going to have to go back and re-clean my earlier purchases - it was just disgusting :thumbdown

So I'm sure that you have all figured this out before but just in case anybody has overlooked it - give it a go, you will be amazed.....

I just felt a disturbance in the Force.... as if hundreds of razors were suddenly pulled out and rushed towards the sink accompanied by cleaning products and Qtips...

Mark1966,

I used to before I starting using an ultra-sonic bath to clean my safety razors.

You are quite right about the amount of gunge you find there in vintage razors !!

Have fun !

Best regards

Which only goes to prove that you don't really need to over clean pre loved razors before you use them. I do though seem to remember that one of the first patients to receive penecillin was a policeman who had septicemia through cutting himself while shaving. They ran out of antibiotic to treat him. He died.

That was one unintended advantage of those older Gillette handles that developed cracks. The first Old type, and the first New that I bought had the cracks, allowing the ball, and the part that the head screws into to be pulled out of the handle, so that I could clean the inside really well. Only then did I epoxy it together. Other handles, without those cracks, I always do the best I can by sticking a Q-tip down in there.

Before a handle repair, I sealed the inside of the handle with an aluminum disk just below the threaded section.

Just FYI I'd already used my ultra-sonic on these.....

Maybe not for long enough though? I tend to be a bit gentler on the older razors with more plate wear after blasting off the silver plating on a single ring early on.

Ive always cleaned them and on 2 that I have Ive filled it with epoxy. It helped with weight and maybe keeping a crack from getting bigger. I used a .22cal nylon brush attached to a cordless drill.
