Does a Damaskeene have to say Damaskeene?

I bought a cased 1912 with the round head of a Damaskeene, but nowhere on the razor does it say "Use only with GEM Damaskeene blades". So, is it a Damaskeene or a junior in disguise?

I would if I could, but I don't know how. I'm new to forums in general, so if you could tell me or link me how to do it from an Ipad, it'd be greatly appreciated.

In the Reply toolbar, Go to Insert Image and selct the "From Computer" tab. Then "Select Files" button - you should get some kind of Gallery option there from which you can select the photo.
Once selected, click on "Upload files" and voila.

In theory at least :)

Well, here it is.

Nice pics!
Seems to be no engraving at all on the back - is that right?

Looks like a 1912 to me, but then I guess I probably wouldn't know the difference unless it had Damaskeene written inside....
They usually also have GEM Cutlery written on the back.

You're right, no engraving. I've compared it to my brass 1912, which has a more angular top plate. My resolution can't quite capture the difference between a normal 1912 and my mystery 1912, but the mystery 1912 has a definite curve to it. There is no engraving on the back, to confirm. If you have a "normal" 1912, do a side by side comparison and see what I mean. The Damaskeene should have a slight curve in the top plate, while the average 1912 has two distinct and straight sections of the top plate, as if someone took a piece of sheet metal and ground a bevel on the edge. If you look closely, you should also see this on your Damaskeene, but it will be a much smoother transition. I'll attempt a pic soon.

There were several variants of the 1912. The curved and angular top plates among them. Yours is a standard 1912.

BTW, Damaskeenes often have round handles.

If it does not say "Use Damaskeene Blades", then it is not a Damaskeene. Most of the Damaskeenes you see have the curved head, but not all. Mine does not. And the 1912 heads are different from each other as well. I have some that are flat, and I have some that are curved. Of the ones that are curved, I have variation as well. I have two different levels of "curvy-ness".

"Ah. Thanks. I guess the hunt for the Damaskeene continues. Still a very nice razor, though. Thanks!"

Others opinions will differ but I don't think the "Damaskeene" shaves are better in any significant way. The only difference I can tell is by the sound, they sound different. My advice is enjoy the one you have. It is among the best razors that can be had at any price.

+1

To be honest, I feel like my 1912 and my Damaskeene shave almost exactly the same. I also prefer the chain-link handle on my 1912. YMMV

I enjoy my 1912 a lot, but I had heard that Damaskeenes were better shavers somewhere and wanted to test out the theory.

True, it has to have those words on the razor to signify that particular model. Waits pics below.
