I was just wondering who else likes to splay their shaving brush hair while lathering. I personally love to do it but I have read that it may be good for the brush. I tell you this, it sure is good for my face.

I splay a little bit. Enough pressure to open the hairs up a bit. I find that this both reduces the scrubbiness of the Tweezerman Brush and also helps to keep plumes of lather contained and keep them from running or dripping. Plus you can scoop up excess lather with an open brush.

I'm not overly concerned about damage to the brush because of how cheap it was/is. If I have to.....i'll buy another.

Hope this helps Ambrose

Just a little to get some of the embedded lather, particularly from that big Rooney I got from you Ambrose

Large brushes are so nice, they do take more water and more soap but man the feel on the skin and the tons of lather you get its fantastic.

How are you liking it and the samples?

Im down to 3 brushes 2 large 1 small.

I have never even thought about it. Maybe I'll pay attention to that tomorrow morning.

What does Art do??

I don't do it on purpose, but....I have a Rooney 3/1 and the design of the handle allows it to slide down into the lather bowl. I also use a ShaveMac with a horn handle and it has a ring that catches on the side preventing the plunge.
I try to let the bristles maintain their natural shape, when possible.

If splay means to push the brush down and opening up the hairs, then yes. I only splay a tad bit when lathering the face, don't do so much when loading my brush w/ creams though.

I really don't know how you could build a lather without splaying, especially with a dense brush. Take the Rooney 3, 1. It's so dense and has such a small foot print that without splaying it's like using a pencil eraser to build a lather.

However, I don't think it works as good with a floppy brush like the Kent Bk4. I used mine daily for one year and made it splay out. Now it has absolutely zero backbone.

In closing, I do splay the brush out loading it and building lather on my face, but how much depends on how dense the brush is.

Round up the usual suspects.........

I am a Splayer! But not when loading the brush. Lathering in my bowl i gently pump sometimes while swirling the brush around to fully load it, then go to town splaying on my face.

cool Badger pic!:thumbup1:

I semi splay... mostly to get under the nose in the stash area and also when loading the brush with soap to get it deep into the breach.

Yes I splay, I believe in it. It really helps when lathering with a boars hair brush, the lather is created a lot faster of the bristles are splayed.
