What's new

Do you know how it is when you just want something different?

Have tried colognes and bought and sold many. Expanded, pared down, expanded and back down now

Have GIT and Tauer's L'Air du Desert Morocain with backups. Have 50ml bottle of Penhaligons English Fern and Acqua di Parma Colonia. Want something new.

I want something that will get noticed, but in a nice way. More for the female types

Thinking of a Guerlain, or a Penhaligons (Quercus, Opus, LP 9 and Endymion are on my list). Not too soapy (Czech and Speake is too soapy on me) and not too much of an offputting note (Elixir did not do it), but not too sweet. I did like Ralph Lauren Romance (the peppery) and a wearing of Chanel Pour Homme Concentree smelled pretty good and lasted. I could do a Chanel and would like to think I could pull off Hermes Rocobar but I dont know

I dont want something that every has, and Habit Rouge would be good but too vanilla. I am 50 so I wanna kinda get a signature fall/winter scent as GIT is my summer (I would have said MI but lately, the last few batches have been short on the watermelon note and GIT and MI are starting to smell so alike, so I ditched MI)

Tauer's LDDM is a great all year scent for me and I tend to wear it when I need a power scent. Not all that much appreciated by a lot, but I love getting to wear it and having it swirl around my head during the morning drive. Wife and daughter kinda liked what made Dirty English stand out.

Ideas?

Next time your in Macy's try a sample of Carolina Herrera for Men. It's labeled and mentioned to as simply "Herrera". It's a really good fall-winter scent if you ask me, and I've gotten plenty of female attention and feedback from it. It's not one of the new, metrosexual scents. It's a classic. YMMV

Let me suggest something new from Creed called Aventus. I was quite attracted to the fragrance after using a sample for a few days. If you are not familiar with Aventus, it has notes that include: Bergamot, Blackcurrant, Apple, Pineapple, Juniper Berries, Birch, Patchouli, Jasmine, Musk, Oak Moss, Ambergris and Vanilla. During my first full week of wearing this fragrance, I was asked by half a dozen people on a daily basis "What is it that you're wearing". My favorite experience with Aventus was with a co-worker who completely forgot what they were going to ask me because they were so captured by my fragrance.

Well, your tastes are definitely specific but, if you truly want something that no one except you has, I recommend that you find a perfumer with a degree in chemistry or some such applicable education; And commission him/her to design a cologne especially for you. That is the only way to go as far as I'm concerned.

In lieu of that however, I suggest you try Faconnable Cologne. It is one of my favorite colognes and it can be purchased at Nordstrom's.

+1. Look at the pure parfum which I find I like better than the EdT.

I agree that the TdH edt and parfum seem quite different. I am not sure I do not go the other way. I find it hard to articulate the differences, and I do not seem to have any samples of the edt around to really study the difference. How would you describe the difference in scent between the edt and the parfum?

I may not have a great suggestion for the OP, I do not think. Caron Yatagan always comes to mind when folks are looking for something different.

Pen's Quercus and Endymion seem to me to be a lot like a lot of things, so maybe not different enough. LP No. 9, is different, for sure, but try before you buy. If you like that one, there are a number of scents along a kind of gourmond (sp?) spectrum that might be what you are looking for. Pen's Douro springs to mind as more "different" and distinct that the other Pens you named apart from Elixir and No. 9, but is say within a standard deviation or so of some "theorectical mean."

I agree with Austin that the aouds, including the supposedly poser aouds, such as the Montales, might be worth an explore. Montale's Aoud Cuir d'Arabie might be right up you alley for instance, if you are looking for something leathery and deep. Montale Black Aoud if you are looking for something in a complex dark rose with other dark elements. Maybe some of the incense-based frags.

A completely different direction altogether would be Lolita Lempecka. Very anisey. Very distinct. Sort of fresh and exotic at the same time. And it is said that the ladies love it. I like it, but I am not sure that I really pull it off that well. I think LL would get you noticed in a good way.

If you want something darker. Maybe something of the grown up, defiinitely not the Haight in the 60s patchoulis, such as Mazzolari Lui. There is a power scent. You will be noticed. It will be different and distinct. It does seem sexy somehow. You would not have to go that far though. There are patchoulis that are not quite so overwhelmingly manly, for want of a better term, that do not take on into sweet incense territory!

Creeds Bois Du Portugal sounds like what you are looking for,to me.Everytime I have used it have gotten compliments from unknown females.
The only drawback is the cost but to me it was worth it.

Knize, great post. I tried Black Aoud and Limes, and too strong for me. I wore Red Vetyver a lot. Caron Yatagan smelled on me like skank. Maybe Musc Ravageur was a vanilla that I could handle. Leather has not been good on me- Lonestar Memories smelled like a saddle, Bulgari Black I think is like burnt rubber on me, and Royal English leather is like the bubblegum that used to come in baseball packs.

If I can find the outlet number for Pens, I might order something if they have it cheap enough. LP 9 was okay on me as I recall on a spritz in March, but elixir was too much piney/eucalyptus.

Lui is gonna be too expensive. It just gets hard to get different, and there was a time when I wanted to test everything. I probably had great bottles and gave up on them too quick

Good notes. I will keep thinking. Black Aoud and Lime Aoud are strong, no doubt. If you are tired of Red Vetyver, from posts by others whose noses I admire, you may be tired of Terre d'Hermes, too, although I still feel the need to test that myself.

Yatagan is probably supposed to smell like skank. (Other Carons are probably more approachable.)

Nothing wrong with your nose if you think Bvlgari Black smells like burning tires! (I really, really like both Yatagan and B Black!) LP No. 9 smells like bubble gum to me, although some love it and think it is a lady attractor, and it is not objectionable to me. I do not know Royal English Leather, Musc Ravageur, Lonestar Memories, or Tauer's LDDM. I will take your word on each.

I really like Elixir, but I know exactly what you are talking about. The exact notes that you do not like really appeal to me, which is fine by me. I think it should be considered a controversial scent.

Something like Mugler Angel or Versace Dreamer would be different and distinct. Not my favorite scents.

<If I can find the outlet number for Pens, I might order something if they have it cheap enough.>

Are you in the UK? Do the Pens outlets ship overseas to the States? I think the number for the Pens outlet would be something nice to have for lots of us! Maybe those numbers are on the Pens web site.

Re-reading your original post you say you want something "new" that will stand out in a nice way, particularly for women. You do not quite say that you are looking for something out of the ordinary, and GIT being your summer signature scent, maybe the "new" reference is more "new" to you than "unusual." Knize Ten probably fits both criteria, but the fact that you did not like Bulgari Black, makes me think you may not like K10.

Scents suggested by others, such as Creed BdP or the Vets (although I am not a fan of Creed Orignal Vet) might be just the ticket. Or, say, PdN New York, which is in something of the same spirit as BdP. Or one of the various MPG scents, in all of their diverse glory.

There really are nearly an infinite number of possibilities out there, but this is fun. Keep coming back. Happy to mislead you and tell you more than i know!

I have no idea if Pens ships from outlet to US. Gonna try to find out though and if so, Ill post it all.

Bois du Portugal and PDN New York - too lavendar I think. I think that is the note that wife thinks is too old-mannish. You are right, LP 9 is a bit like bubble gum. I read that mayb Opus 1807 or Endymion might work. Maybe elixir might subside.

Knize 10 was too strong.

New - not necessarily the new scents like Chanel Bleu, but going back to something I might have had. I tried the release of Havana, and wife sorta liked Cuba. CS 88 was a bit soapy on me. To give you an idea, I had dyed my goatee for like 7 years. Shaved it down to a moustache and not dyeing the moustache or my hair, so I have about half white in the moustache and grey at the sides of my hair. Thinning on top. So I am not afraid to look my age. So I dont want a cologne that my daughter's boyfriend wears, and I dont want the Acqua di Gio in popularity.

Im just trying to pick brains without having to do a lot of testing. Sorta like tobacco (Fumerie Turque and Millar Harris Feuilles de Tabac) and pepper/spicy (Piper Nigrum and Red Vetyver) but not too vanilla (Les Neredies Imperial Oppoponax). Dont mind unconventional like CDG 2 Man but that is one I can tire of.

I've mentioned this scent before, and I really can't say enough good things about it. I'd suggest trying out Blonde Tabac from Aftelier. Its notes are cedarwood, lime, jasmine, hay & blonde tobacco. It's an all-natural concoction, which unfortunately means it doesn't last too long (it lasts much longer when applied to cloth). It's also expensive. But the flip side is it smells amazing while it's there.

You also might want to check out some of the Sonoma Scent Studio's offerings. I particularly recommend Winter Woods and Incense Pure. Her Tabac Aurea also looks interesting.

Good luck!

I do not mind you picking my brain, although the picking could get slim. It is impossbile to personally try everything.

Opus might be one to try. I still prefer Douro. I would not expect Elixir to subside. Either you like those camphor notes or you do not. If you like some but not all Elixir notes there are other oreentals that are going to be better for you.

I like Floris Elite as a tobacco, but it does not seem to get high ratings from anyone but me and Austin! I love Havana, but I do not think I would wear it every day. I like Cuba, but I do not love it as much as I love many other C&S scents. Again, not sure I would want to wear it every day.

A scent that I personally could wear every day is Dunhill 1934. I would think it might be perfect for you, but I am worried about the florals in the middle notes. I would not say they were lavender, but still I am not hearing much about you liking any floral notes in a scent. Dunhil 1934 is definitely not dominated by floral. It has amazing evolution for one thing. I can see it as signature scent for sure. I think it is a masterpiece.

Keep talking. This is still fun to me.

C&S Frankincencse & Myrrh - a nice one.
C&S Dark Rose - another nice one with a hint of aoud.
Pour un Homme de Caron - nothing remotely like Yatagan, and loved by many as the ultimate classic masculine scent. Lavender and vanilla.

I'll throw a few possibilities into the mix of great suggestions that have already been given. Since you've mentioned liking tobacco, and not too much vanilla, I'll suggest Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille, which I think is a great fresh tobacco scent with a mild vanilla mixed in. The vanilla is not too strong, and just sweetens and softens the tobacco a little. Others I'll suggest, since you mentioned liking, or your wife and daughter liking Dirty English, are Gucci pour Homme in the black & white checked box - see pic below, which I've found in Marshalls & TJMaxx in the last year or two. I added the pic because Gucci has two "pour Homme" EdT's, as well as Gucci pour Homme II, which is in a similar box except it's black and light blue checked.

Dolce & Gabanna The One is another smooth cedar, which you can test at any department store. Where the Dirty English is, to me, a more raw version of cedar, both the Gucci and D&G are smoother, more refined, with a touch of vanilla, but it's the cedar that really stands out.

I'll also suggest M7, by Yves Saint Laurent, which is in the same "family" or style to me as the Gucci and the D&G. I had a man ask me at the airport last week what I was wearing, and he wrote it down. He said his wife wanted him to find something he likes, and testing in stores overwhelmed him, so when he noticed one he likes, he wanted to get the name.

Since one of your objectives is to find a scent that will get noticed by females, I suggest you include your wife & daughter in all your sampling, as their opinions will very likely be different from yours. Some of the scents I love, my wife doesn't like at all. And some she likes, I won't wear. There are so many great ones to choose from, though, I enjoy finding ones that I can truly enjoy wearing knowing that she likes it, too. I've seen comments in the past suggesting you wear what you want regardless of what your wife thinks, but I like to spend time close to my wife, and I've been around people who wore perfum or cologne that I didn't like, and it's not pleasant. I choose to not do that to my wife.

Good luck!

Floris Elite, D&G ( I like but wife does not and same with M7).

THose CS suggestions are definitely doable.

Not into vanilla all that much, trying to stay away from that. I know that makes it lovely to some ladies but on me, it goes sweet, sickly sweet.

I like spicy, but sometimes, Piper Nigrum is too much pepper. Other times, it mellows with the cedar and spices come out. Tauer's L"air really kicks those resins and cedar in. Lasts a long time and projects like crazy on me

Id like to see if Guerlain or Chanel has what I want. I loved the Pour Mons. but wife did not but it may grow on her.
