Do any barber shops offer honing services for Straight Razors?

The main reason I don't use a Straight Razor is because I don't know what I would do if I dulled the blade. I don't know how to hone, but I want to eventually. I just got the idea that if I dull the blade, I can bring it to a local barbershop until I know how to do it myself. That would be a great help. The only thing is I don't know if they do that anymore. Most of them use the disposable kind. It's too late to call and ask today, so I'll call the different places tomorrow. I just wanted to ask on here first so I have some sort of idea what to expect.

Thanks!

im kinda in the same boat

just started up a few months ago and dont have anybody to show my stuff to or ask if it was done right.....

There are several expert level Straight Razor Honers on the board, who will hone your razor for a change.

Since most barber shops use disposable blade straights, if they know how to hone, they are likely going to be very out of practice.

I certainly wouldn't take a chance with such an endeavor, but it's your face that will suffer from their inadequacies not mine.:ohmy:

well for me at least, i have nobody to really show... i basically took it up all on my own. I think my shaves is good but I cant help but thinking sometimes that it is actually not to good and I don't know what im missing

maybe eventually i'll just send my razor to somebody for inspection

Your question is kinda old fashioned, in that if you asked it say sixty or more years ago the answer may have been "yes". michiganlover gives good advice here as there are a number of honemisters onboard here.

@michiganlover Thumb area eh?... Bay City? Manistique here dere eh...

I'm quite sure that most barber shops all use disposable blade straights now, due to health reasons.

Perhaps if you could find an older barber, they might still have a strop and might do it for you at a minimal charge.

Have you thought of using the Feather DX or RG straight razor? No need to strop, just change the blade. Check out the straight razor section here at B&B for an older post on Feather straight users. If you might be interested, take a look at the Feather straights here: www.classicshaving.com :thumbup1:
