DMT for bevel setting?

Hi,

I'm using lapping films and sometimes I need more than that to set the bevel. I don't want to spend a fortune for stones, and I know that with stones I would need a DMT to lap them.
So, is there a DMT that would be good for bevel setting and also for stones lapping (if one day I decide to go that route)?

Thanks!

600x/1.2k will work. New ones are very aggressive and they do tend to leave scratch marks that are difficult to get out with higher grits.
But - they work.

Would the 1.2k do a good job for stone lapping? I'm worried the grit would be too fine for that.

I have used a DM 325 on some eBay razors with "issues" (warps, chips, etc.) - but still go to something around 1K to get bevel ready for final finishing. Shapton 1000 is my current favorite for bevel setting, followed by coticule or a progression of 12u - 1u films.

I have an Atoma 1.2k to lap my finisher stone. It works like a charm.

Yeah I have used my DMT325 for some major work on a few old razors and found that in the beginning before it was bedded in it was extremely harsh, and now it has settled down it is a much better but personally I have stopped using it and just put in more work on the 800 and 1200 Kings that I have as I find it leaves too many microchips on the edge and you have to spend along time on the next stone to remove the deep scratch marks any way. Great lapping stone though once it has worn in, don't notice any scratch marks on any of my stones now when lapping.

I'd say go with the 325 for lapping and once its worn in maybe give it a try for bevel setting if you like but not before. I would think that anything finer grade than the 325 would only be good for lapping sensitive finishers and would take to long to lap lower grit stones.

DMT advises against using the 1.2k for lapping. It does a nice job of smoothing up the surface from coarser lapping (i.e., DMT 325), but I would hate to have to lap anything from beginning to end with a DMT 1.2k.

DMT1200 for bevel setting.

You won't need it for flattening stones, since honing with lapping film is far superior anyhow.

If you do lap with the higher grit DMT make sure you use it under a steady stream of water to avoid abrading diamonds from the plate.

I have a DMT Duo sharp 325/1200 and it works great for lapping and bevel setting. If the razor or stone need a lot of work i use the 325 and once it is done i go to the 1200 to clean up after the 325.

Lot of different opinions here!

I didn't expect less from you Seraphim! :wink2:

Since I don't want to spend a fortune and I don't plan to buy stones in the near future, I guess I'll have to trust you on that one. My main problem right now is setting the bevel, so I think the 1.2k would do the job.

But I won't know for sure the superiority of film before I try to hone with stones. That will have to wait...
