Django Unchained

I'm wondering if Quentin Tarantino is a pipe smoker. His films show some nice pipes.

Currently watching Django Unchained. Quite a few nice pipes in this movie, from Cobbs to Church Wardens.

More or less everyone else back then smoked, Quentin really wanted to make a lot of the movie historically accurate. He had a really good interview on the CBC a few weeks ago.

I've heard/read that the movie is the usual violent offering from Quentin. Unfortunate, I'd liked to have checked it out for the scenes with pipes, but I really don't like his style of movies a whole lot.

His stuff isn't for everyone that is for sure!

It definitely contains violence befitting a portrayal of slavery in the deep south. Add to that violence befitting a Tarantino film. The end result: lots of violence and lots of vulgar language. Definitely a specific taste.

I find myself focusing on the pipes and the mustaches.

As an aside, I did enjoy the Kill Bill movies. The violent stuff in those was different, almost satirical in ways... or cartoonish, I guess. Anyways, I'm enjoying watching the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series since there's often lots of classic pipe scenes. That and I'm a huge Holmes fan to begin with.

Hmmm. I need to check that out. I'm a huge Holmes fan as well, although I don't like the Robert Downey Jr version. I'm more of a Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce type of guy.

KB1 was a joke to me, with the fountains of blood. 2 was pretty damn good, IMO

I admit I was not much of a fan of the Kill Bill flicks. I loved Inglorious Basterds. There's always Reservoir Dogs, which I really liked when it first came out.

You definitely need to check the Jeremy Brett stuff then. I thought he nailed the part pretty solid, all said and done.

It's on there, that is where I watch it now. I used to catch it once in a while on cable, back when I still had a TV in the house. lol

We still have a TV, but I finally cut the cord and got rid of cable once and for all. Good riddance! Now we just stream if we want to watch something.

Overall, I give Django a thumbs up. It is violent and vulgar, but both seem to appropriately represent the subject matter. The story line is good. As with Tarantino films in the past, I found myself rooting for the good guys and despising the bad guys. Christoph Waltz was great. He has now fulfilled the role of "Beloved Good Guy (Django)" as well as "Despised Bad Guy (Inglorious Basterds)" Samuel L Jackson delivered as well.

I would recommend the film, but warn all that there is lots of blood, lots of vulgar language and prolific use of the N Word. There is also some good pipe smoking and some decent facial hair stylings.

Oddly enough, I found the cartoon sequence of violence far more unsettling that the comedy live action killings!

From what I can tell he wanted the kill bill movies to basically be live action anime, I'm no expert on the medium but that is exactly what it looks like to me. I do like that little pipe a lot.

With Tarantino you know what you get. Stories are excellent, violent, and often include some comic relief. I love the way he makes movies in certain styles. He nailed the spaghetti western with Django.
