Disposable blade razors

I am thinking of getting a straight razor. What is the deal with the disposable blade razors, worth the money or should I just get a real one? I would like to keep the cost down to see if I like it. I do keep my pocket knives sharp enough to shave with but I don't have a strop or paste.

Thanks Doug

FWIW I would say waste of money. I think they would be like a de blade only half as usefull making them twice as costly. I forever turned my back on the str8 (that's what the cool kids call them) they are not for me, but a half assed str8 wanna be nope, never. :001_rolle

So while out Christmas shopping maybe I will swing in a few antique and or pawn shops and look for a used one. Looks like I could spend as much on the strop and paste as the razor itself.

I have a suggestion. Perhaps a str8 devote may lend you one to try before you buy? There are lots of gr8 guys here and I'm sure one of them would love to help out a potential str8 user?

You might find that the real thing is cheaper to start out with. Getting one of the so-called beginners razors which is not fancy but something that will hold a good edge along with a strop is likely to be cheaper than a new feather AC with some blades.

I do like razors which use the disposable feather AC blades, they give a nice shave, but they might only save you money in the short term in that they save you time.

I have not used one of those inexpensive straights which use half a DE blade, I have no idea how those compare.
