Dirty Bird Scuttle question

I have noticed some pictures of the scuttles here that some people have ordered them with a spiral groove, vertical grooves, and/or horizontal grooves. Do you think they help with lather generation? If you have a smooth bowl, do you wish you had ordered one with a groove(s)?

Thanks

I went with horizontal and vertical grooves for mine. Initially I was really frustrated as I couldn't generate lather as well as I could in a plain mug/bowl. Just took a little bit of trial and error to work out how to use it and I now believe I made the right choice.

FWIW, they are fantastic scuttles - I got the 1.5 size.

I'm bumping this because I could use some more info. I've noticed that some of the other scuttles have grooves in the lathering bowl, so any and all input is appreciated. The one concern I have with the grooves is that it makes more surface area to cool the lather bowl. It may not be a valid concern. I currently lather in a ceramic rice bowl, which is very smooth, and it works great. So, if the grooves really make a difference, then I'd like to know. If not, then I'll stick with the smooth surface.

Thanks

My take on this is that the extra surface area would better transfer the heat to the lathered brush, making it warmer.

Why don't you email Julie, the atrisan/proprietor at dirtybirdpottery.com? She has always been very responsive the times I contacted her. She can tell you exactly why she put the grooves in her scuttles. My recollection was that it promotes lather production, but instead of waiting and bumping this thread it just makes sense to ask her.
